In our part of the world, it is a rarity to find someone who does not enjoy eating meat.
Meat’s special combination of fat, carbohydrates and amino acids interact together in a process called maillard reaction during cooking. This produce aromas so pleasant that they make us salivate and go weak at the knees.
How ever this might come to a sorrowful end if you are bitten by the lone star tick.
It is a type of tick common to much of the Eastern United States and Mexico, that bites without causing pain, frequently going unnoticed and staying attached to its victim for as long as a week until it is swollen with blood.
According to mayo clinic, the bite transmits a sugar molecule called alpha-gal into the victim's body. In some individuals, this caused an immune system reaction that later on triggers mild to severe allergic reactions to red meat, such as beef, lamb and some mammal products like milk, cheese, gelatin etc.
Now each time you ate one of those foods, some hours later you will be plagued with swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat, diffuculties in breathing, diarhoea, wheeze, nausea and possibly anaphylactic shock. This is the severe reality of those unlucky enough to eat red meat of any type after experiencing a bite from the Lone star tick.
