Assimi Goita, a colonel in the Malian army, has declared himself head of the “National Committee for the salvation of the People”, a group created by rebels in the country.

He announced his new position after a meeting with top civil servants on Wednesday.

The development comes after a coup on Tuesday that led to the resignation of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

United Nations Security Council on Wednesday ordered Malian mutineers to immediately release detained officials, including the country’s president, and “return to their barracks without delay.”

The 15 members also “underlined the urgent need to restore rule of law and to move towards the return to constitutional order,” according to a Council statement.

Rebel soldiers took President Ibrahim Keita and Prime Minister Boubou Cisse into custody on Tuesday afternoon and drove the pair to a military base on the outskirts of Bamako, which they had seized that morning.

Keita, whose government had been beset by months of protests over economic stagnation, corruption and a brutal Islamist insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives, later announced early Wednesday that he had resigned to avoid “bloodshed”.

“If it pleased certain elements of our military to decide this should end with their intervention, do I really have a choice?” he said of the day’s events.

“(I must) submit to it, because I don’t want any bloodshed,” the ousted 75-year-old president added in a television broadcast.

The coup’s leaders appeared on television hours later to pledge a political transition and new elections within a “reasonable time”.

Malian Air Force Deputy Chief of Staff, Ismael Wague, said he and his fellow officers had “decided to take responsibility in front of the people and of history”.

Hard men them.Coup is no longer desirable but the power-desperate mindset of many an African leader even under democracy tends to make it a welcome idea.

Guess it's the same UN that stood idle while most African nations are engulf in needless political crisis because of selfish & wicked leaders?

From feelers coming from Mali, majority of the citizens are happy with the soldiers coup. This is what happens when the citizens loose hope in democratic govt. "A truly patriotic and selfless Military is 100% better than all these Criminals who call themselves politicians and demo-crazy." -credits.

Nice coup. This is exactly what will still happen again in Nigeria. The greedy politicians are just looting and relooting us without fear of the unknown.

They cited insecurity and corruption as the reason behind the 2012 coup in Mali, and 8 years later they’re still battling insecurity and corruption in the same Nation. What is wrong with Mother Africa?

See how UN is making orders because it's a small African country.

If it's a big country, they will be doing diplomacy and dialogue.

Is like you're calling for their death.

If they do so they will be charged for treason...

The best option for them is to conduct another election and handover to the new Government.

So the UN was active before things went South in Mali abi. So they can not call the casted away president and prime minister to order to deliver good governance to the people...

Now that the will of the people has been done they are now giving order.... Shior.

About time The UN focuses on the rason d’etre for coup d’etat on the African Continent. Such putsch are largely given fillip by crass misgovernance and incompetence by politicians who take advantage of the concept of democracy to rig elections and behave irresponsibly in power. The politicians are to be held responsible. Presently in Nigeria The President turns a blind eye to the criminal acts of his Fulani Kinsmen and the malfeasance of Adams Oshiomhole in Edo State as the Edo Guber approaches. How irresponsible can politicians be!
