The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has said the state has passed the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He, however, said there was the need for vigilance, saying the scourge was not over.

Abayomi spoke on Wednesday during a talk show on Nigeria Info 99.3FM, themed, ‘Fighting COVID-19 in Lagos’.

He said, “Lagos might be a its peak in the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s not over yet as we may see an escalation of positive cases. However, until we see a decline in the number of positive cases, we shouldn’t relent.

“We believe the lockdown was not effective because of the reality of a city where people go out to fend for themselves on a daily basis. If not, you will replace a health crisis with an economic crisis.

“Concerning the number of positive results seen this period, we have sample collection centres in every local government in Lagos, so the more we test the more cases we find. If there are no more positives, then the outbreak is slowing down.

“Our observation is that Lagos has passed the worst of the pandemic; it has passed the peak of the pandemic and is now on the flattening stage and over time, we will experience a down slope of the virus, then the end of COVID-19.”

Abayomi noted that the large young population of the state helped in reducing the fatalities in the state.

On August 24, the commissioner announced that he had also tested positive for the virus.

Nigeria's Covid 19 graph has never been a curve cos of inconsistent figures without a pattern. So when u say Lagos has passed its peak, it's just simply saying it's residents have moved on or found alternative ways by self medicating. Even in Kano, despite its huge population, the recent number of confirmed cases is so low as though they have recieved the vaccine from Russia. Meanwhile, residents in Kogi refused to act this drama.

Was there a real curve in the first place? Other countries had a bit of consistent high figures that showed what looked like a peak, then a descent, not the up today down tomorrow, up up again, down, up, up, down, down, up...sort of graph our figures will show if plotted on a graph sheet.

Seun:
Kudos to this man for working very hard, but based on what has happened in other countries, with churches, schools, and some other high risk establishments reopened, the situation can go from great to terrible within a few days.

Seun, I beg to disagree because there hasn't been any real lock down in Nigeria compared to most of those countries and we have been doing fine. so, the ease in restrictions will add little or nothing to the said curve now

to the curve issue, I think people are no longer reporting to ncdc again. people are running it their own way, no time for ncdc drama jhor

Good but I think we don't do much testing, which is why the figures are low.

Only 1870 test/million pop done so far. Very Low. If the test are multiplied by a ten or hundred, will we still have the same result and be at the said peak

Nigeria covid19 version is what I still find difficult to understand.
Now, you reduced testing or not testing at all and you are claiming the number of cases are reducing.

Thank God that all the evil predictions from the west failed, their plans to make money from supplying millions of body bags to Africa because of poor healthcare services crumbled.
But then we should be vigilant like he mentioned, Covid19 has become more of a political matter in America than a health crisis

Peak milk

Let’s admit; we have and had no strategy to combat this virus.

You cannot be talking about peak and curves without data and without any strategy other than holding a COVID presser daily to announce daily figures like election result! We spent more on making media gestures on fighting the virus than we did on actually fighting the spread of the virus
