The aim of this manual is to analyze Crude protein content of garden snail so as to provide information which will help in incorporating these non-conventional animals into fish feed.
The feeding cost of fish takes 60% or two third of the total operational cost in fish farming. This has been a major factor affecting the development and expansion of Aquaculture enterprise in Africa. The success of fish farming depends invariably on provision of suitable and economical fish feed. A survey of fish farms in Nigeria in 2004 showed 86% of fish farms do not use standard supplementary feed due to high cost of production.

You can start both. As for me I rather go for pig farming first. B/cos it is easier to start, It start up capital is low as far as you have space. thier feeding, no qualms, they eat anything but you can supplemnt it. Buyers are readily available, especially in the south-south.

i have been into fish farming for over 5yrs now, although i started with fingerlings production.
i have at no point recorded a loss in harvest because i do my research well.
one of the main advantages of fish farming in my experience is ready available market so i wonder why people said they are having problems selling thier fishes. i dont even have to look for buyers b4 harvest time, when the fishes are ready, i just make phone calls to those market women n within a week or 2 they clear the stock.
the major problem i see with fish farming is too many advisers that lead farmers astray. some farmers dont have a picture of how capital intensive feeding of the fishes are n run into trouble in the middle.
for example, as a very rough estimate just for you guyz to have an idea, a 10g fingerlins will eat 1kg of feed to grow to a size of 1kg spread over 4-6mnths.
now starting with imported floating feeds and gradualling changing to local feeds, d 1kg of feed will have an average cost of N250.
so feeding 1fish to size of 1kg is aprox N250 n you sell 1 fish for N350 per kg,
so profit on 1fish is approx N100.
now imagine u stocking 5000 fingerlins, u will need a wooping N1.2million as variable cost and this is what a lot of people dont know.
as long as you have a good picture and you have the money or resize ya expectations to fit ya pockets, u wont run into problems.
other important factors are stocking density, good fingerlins, good feed and management.

Hello All,

We are a commercial aquaculture farm which started operation in 2007 located at Agura, Ikorodu, Lagos.
We specialise in qualitative mass production of Clarias frys, fingerlings, juveniles and table size fish up to 2kg and above.

We employ proven hatchery techniques (from extensive training) gathered from Royal Fish Benin
Current brood stocks for production all originates from Royal fish Benin.

We currently have for sale now several thousand fingerlings, and in 7 weeks several thousands juveniles.
There are a further several thousand fries that would be maturing to fingerlings and juveniles in 8 weeks and 12 weeks respectively.
We do batch production to have a continual supply of fingerlings and juveniles.

We are selling about 5 tonnes of table size catfishes in September 2011

Prices are competitive dependent on quantity required. (We'll deliever if required, but this is dependent on quantity)

Thanks for keeping this site on; can someone please send an updated market analysis of fish and or pig business. I must encourage everyone who is interested in doing any business to continue-but there should be no limit in learning process. Put your mind to it and don't be greedy; success shall be yours. As per the china catfish-Personally I don't eat them. In conclusion the demand for poultry, meat and fish will continue to increase like every other consumables.

In my area - Akwa Ibom, most pork joint don't operate consistently because they don't have regular pigs to meet their needs. That means there is ready market for pigs here. As earlier mentioned, It is possible that we don't breed the right size and specie of fishes even though Nigeria imports fishes to meet local demand. From the market, the 2 principal types of fishes in ready demand are: Ice fish (Titus, etc.) and Dry fish. The dry fish are usually small (some fingerlings sized) and mostly fitted to sticks. My belief is that for fish pond business to fit into the fish market structure, they may have to breed those type of fishes that they can dry and sell to match the existing ones in the market or we have something similar to Ice Fishes - Comments pls

The main Success in any fish farming business is the fish feed. If one can produce cost effective feed then your profit margins can be increased.

We are into manufacturing and exporting of Floating Fish Feed Plants to Nigeria and other African Countries. We also supply floating fish feed extruder plant to local Indian fish farmers. Our site is www.feedextruder.com and we are always in process to make the floating fish feed pallets machines cost effective for the farmers.

Recently we have come up with a cost effective pellet fish feed extruder machine for small scale fish farmers.

Please get in touch with us for any query, we will be Happy to help you out in this.

Dear members,

We have a medium sized fish farm for lease split into an earthen ponds site and a fenced concrete ponds site, both sites with less than a mile apart.

Farm is based in Agura/Gberigbe, Ikorodu, Lagos, Nigeria.

The earthen ponds has the below

- Twenty two 40ft by 20ft earthen ponds all bagged to avoid erosion, keep water clean and safeguard against flooding (on a 6 standard plots of land)
- 2 boreholes to support daily water replenishment and oxygenation and cabin for farm workers and storage.
- Ideal for grow-out

Fenced farm has the below:

- 24 standard outdoor concrete ponds (fenced standard 4 plots of land, 12 concrete nurseries, 4 locally made re-circulatory hatchery tanks and numerous plastics backup tanks.
- There is a feed mill on the fenced farm built separately with mixer, grinder, grounder, pelletiser and dryer, all locally made. (space available in feedmill for further storage)
- Also on this farm are 3 former poultry pens that can be converted for other agric purposes.
- Two bore-holes
- Generator and power supply room
- Over-head water tanks
- Two bedrooms self contained apartment both ensuite with 3 bedroom staff living quarters (separate rest room for staffs)
- 20 foot container for food storage
- Farm is ready for use with several other facilities and it is ideal for both grow-out and fingerlins and juveniles production

The reason for lease is because I am now back abroad due to young family and as we all know, a fish farm cannot be managed remotely.

Pictures of farm can be seen on facebook page below:

Fish Farming is great. I studied Animal Science in school but always envied those in fisheries.

Please if you know what is good for you, do not attend those seminars on catfish. Even if you do, do not listen to what they say.

The fishery I managed in Lekki had about 10 small ponds started with almost 4000 fingerlings. I learnt some hard lessons. The worst is selling the fish off, but I'll start with the first.

Cost of feeding. It may seem moderate in the initial stages, but towards the end, about 5 months time, you'll hate life. So I suggest you don't go spending recklessly on feed. The plan I came up with was to start feeding the fingerlings with the pelleted type floating feed that is obtainable from CHI. After 2 months then you start feeding them with the cheaper not pelleted locally made feed. Till they reach market size.

Shade your fish pond from sunlight. The more shade the catfish have, the less active they are so they burn less energy exercising. The shade also makes them less aggressive so less cannibalism. Thereby less loss.

It's also good to sprinkle a little salt. It works but I haven't proven how. Its not my theory so its not up to me to prove it. But it works.

This next step is something I don't know if I should prescribe. Well, if you're operating in a truly intensive atmosphere, and you know the catfish are almost always in shade, try to reclassify the fish by selecting the bigger ones and putting them together in the same pond but at lesser stocking density. This will allow those smaller ones left in the pond to grow at faster rates. Remember, if you have not taken measures to reduce the aggressiveness of your catfish, don't try this! If you do, they big fishes in the same pond will compete for dominance and territoriality of the new pond they're in and some may die.

By the third month of farming your fish, you should start bringing fish dealers, market women, pepper soup joint owners and restaurant owners to take a tour of your farm so you start building a customer base for the eventual harvest and market time in the next 2 months. Don't forget to inform neighbours too because its almost impossible to sell your first harvest in bulk. You may find some dealers that may book to buy all of your harvest. Good for you. But if someone else gets there a minute before them, SELL! SELL!! SELL!!!
The saddest thing you'll experience is keeping and feeding market size fish fox weeks because of lack of buyers.

Let your market price be moderate. About N300 is okay, depending on your location. So keep this in mind through every step of your production process. Limit your spending to what will give you reasonable profit at the end of the day. Remember, assuming you start off with 5,000 fingerlings,
cost of fingerlings (approximately) N50,000.
Cost of feed at approximately N4,000/day is N600,000.
Preliminary recoup on fixed cost N100,000.
Some kain yeye, yeye cost N50,000.

So at the point of harvest if you're left with 4500 adult catfish, at N300 each,
that's N1,350,000.

So profits may lie in the area of N1,350,000 - N800,000

=N550,000 or less. Not bad for a beginner.

Then finally, I would like you to realise that there are a lot of Chinese coming into Nigeria these days. Besides that, there are lots of Chinese restaurants. The Chinese have their own species of catfish and I believe if you can raise them here, you can charge cutthroat prices. You could sell each one for more than N1,000 each and it doesn't cost you anything more in raising them except the extra cost in acquiring the exotic fingerlings. So imagine selling 4,500 market size chinese catfish at N1,000 each. Thats N4,500,000. That gives about N3,700,000 or less. Not bad at all.

So take care and run things well. I just found a text from the Sino-Nigerian trade group or so. It contains phone numbers of 3 fishery experts sent to Nigeria by the Chinese government. I'm just seeing the document for the very first time and its tempting me to go back to fisheries. Hmmm. Well, I'll think about this. Free research consultation.

Well take care. I hope I dealt with all aspects. I'll post the Sino-Nigerian document differently. Its so loooong!

As for pig farming, not everybody eats pigs. In fact, less than a quarter of Nigerians eat pigs. Besides, I hate pigs. Their stench, their squeal and their weird little tails. I hate them. I used to skip practicals in school when it came to piggery.
