West Ham have scored only 14 Premier League goals this season; only Birmingham, with 13, have fewer.

They will take comfort, however, from the fact that Liverpool have only 12 goals from 13 away games.

Yet Liverpool are unbeaten against West Ham for more than three years, dating back to January 2008 when they lost 1-0 at Upton Park.

Since then, in six Premier League meetings home and away, have won five – including the last four – and drawn one.

In the last four victories, Liverpool have scored three goals in each game and conceded just two.

Curiously, 11 of the 14 goals scored in those games were netted in the first half.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has played down reports that striker Andy Carroll will be fit to make his debut in Sunday’s game.

Carroll, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle in January for a club record fee of £35m, has not featured for his new club because of a thigh problem.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last six Premier League games but they will also be without Jonjo Shelvey (knee) while former West Ham favourite Joe Cole is a doubt with and ankle problem.

There have been 12 goals in West Ham’s last two games, the 3-3 draw at West Bromwich Albion and Monday’s 5-1 FA Cup win over Burnley.

But they will again be without Matthew Upson, with an Achilles injury, and striker Robbie Keane, formerly a Liverpool player, with a calf strain.
