Your comment reeks of ignorance and it's not an insult. I don't insult. I posted something to warn protesters of an impending plan for violence and steer clear when it starts. You obviously didn't comprehend mine before replying.

But he was incarcerated unjustly for 2 years without trial or investigation to prove his culpability or otherwise ...

And he was being extorted to no end by inspector Dele as confessed by the accuse.

That's the meat of the post and not the alleged offence, which we are yet to know.

How is it the police's business that a man was remanded in prison? Is this not a judicial problem?

Please, explain what I don't understand to me.

In a place like Nigeria, when someone is accused of an offence, he is assigned to an IPO-A police officer in charge of the prosecution. The responsibility of this police officer is to see that the matter is taken to court and the matter is looked into and the person is either discharged or sentenced.

Now, some of these rogue police men will demand money from the suspect before taking up the matter to court.

If you don't have money, you get to stay in the prison and the trial will be on awaiting for a long time. When you raise money, they carry your file and start the case.

With this, many people don't have the funds to pay for their own prosecution. Some will commit an offence that should be 5 years max, they will be in the prison for like 10 years or more.

Some are innocent and have no money to pay for the case to be decided, they will also suffer unjustly. Can you see that many police officers are going to end up in jail themselves?

May you become a victim of a crime you know nothing of.

Nigerians and senseless curses, no brain, no nothing. Wait until one of those loose criminals visit your home, they will rape your mother and sisters, only then will your sense come back. Fool! I'm 99% sure that those rapists and murderers who raped and murdered that university girl in Edo state few months ago were in that prison.

There are more innocent people in Nigerian prison than true criminals. I am with you but again we can't have innocent people in prison. The police will never release them.

A lot of people in prison are there because of no specific reason.
A cousin of mine who traveled to Lagos for work got arrested around 9pm during a police raid at the area, the raid was as a result of a deadly fight that happened ealier in the day. Note: This cousin of mine was not aware of the incident that happened because he used to leave home early in the morning and come back late at night.

Those that were raided called thier relatives and they got bailed the second day, unfortunately for my cousin he lost his phone during the raid... More to the story.

Long story short, he was taken to court the second week which was the month end, he was to pay a bill of 15k by the Judge, since non of his people was there he was taken to prison. Could you believe he was in prison for complete two years for no specific reason?
Fortunately for him after second year he was in the prison, a boy was brought to the prison and they became friends because they are from the same local government, they shared experiences of what got them to prison and it was both raid. When the parents of the boy came to bail him after the court hearing, my cousin pleaded with the boy and wrote our family home address to the boy and his parents in order for them to let us know what happened to him.
He spent 2 years and a month in prison before we heard about him and we were able to travel down to Lagos and bail him from the court.

That means if that boy from his local government was not brought to prison that means my cousin might still be in prison by now.

Your cousin dull Sha

So he spent 2wks in detention and could not even get a bailed celly to locate any of his friends or relatives or even beg any police officer to get in touch via phone to you guys.

And then spent 2 yrs in prison awaiting trial when he can easily have access to a phone from other prisoners or wardens.

Nah. Your cousin is either lying about what truly transpired or he is a full autist.

Jeez

This is why Police prisecutors should be banned from courts

The Police simply should refer the matter to the state AG who will decide on the evidence provided by the Police if to go to trial. If the evidence or case is weak, the AG dismisses the case and orders the Police to release. If the AG sees there is enough evidence then he or she assigns the case to the Public prosecution office to charge the person to court.

Police prosecution should be limited to non-,felony cases and only cases that can lead to a fine conviction or. Sentence of less than 6mths.

Is it not the useless police that charged them to court and opposed their bail and later refuse to appear in court over their bail hearing until they are bribed ?

The judiciary is passive and is expected to only act on matters brought before it. The judiciary is an arbutere between the people and the govt and an accused.

Scrap police prosecution and let only thing state AG decide whom to charge to court based on preliminary evidence and investigation by the Police .

If this is done , the backlog in the judiciary will be reduced as the useless police won't clog the system with their stupid and baseless cases.

Limit police prosecution to only petty crimes that can be settled with an option of a fine and or less than 3mths sentence. You go see how police will get sense by force.

They even have to cough out money to the wardens to take them to court on their assigned court dates.

The wardens will tell them they need money for fuel.

Nigerian prison is pure capitalism

You can live a non regimented life behind those walls and have access to anything you want as long as you have money .

Read of a case where a convicted innate (not Awaiting Trial) even got prison armed guards (,whose uniforns are similar to Mopol) to escort him to town in a convoy of his jeeps to scam a medical supplies store of several wheel chairs using a fake bank transfer. Some high profile prisoners even spend the weekend from Friday evening up to Monday morning outside the prison. You can have women, generators,. Phones, and whatsover as long as you have money to bribe the wardens. Al Mustapha even impregnated his two wives during his 13ys life imprisonment.

That's why you will see some high profile efcc suspects begging the judge to have them remanded in prison custody. Inside life is even safer than in real-life as you are assured that no police or kidnapper can touch you while there . This is why SARS and EFCC like having custody of suspects because they can bleed them dry .

tl;dr: Prison life in Nigeria is not as regimented as you may think and is also the most liberal if you have money. If you don't, then get ready for hell.

All of a sudden, all Nigerian prisoners just became innocent! That's right. I wonder where they're keeping all the rapists, kidnappers armed robbers, murderers, etc.
A prisoner surfaced in a video and declared himself innocent and he just became innocent like that? I'm sure those ones who killed that university girl inside the church during the lockdown are among the freed prisoners. They're innocent too.
This madness will turn around and bite you in the as$, fact not a curse

Nnamdi Kanu once referred to this country as a zoo, people went wild with comments and called him names.

This country is worse than a zoo. Just listen to this man speak.

I was against the action of those that freed the inmates but listening to them speak, man, Nigeria is done.

Nigeria bad a long way to go, it will take a revolution to change the hands of time and put the country in the part of greatness. Our Secuirity aparachik is in shambles, from the military to paramilitary to the police. It is only administering of constant pressure like what is going on that will force our leaders to put the country in the right path, imagine Hamza impregnating his wives as an inmates is the hight of the corruption going on in out correctional centres. We all must lend our voice to put an end to this vices bedevilling our society, they say enough is enough. Let's take our country back from those who had sworn to take it the abiss.
