Manchester United's season has been strange to say the least. They top the Barclays Premier League table currently, are through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup and are in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, knowing full well that they haven't played anywhere near their best football by any stretch of imagination. Talks of the treble are doing the rounds, but there is still much to be done if they have to match the success they attained in 1999.

The Red Devils suffered two major setbacks in quick succession recently, going down to Chelsea, and then Liverpool in the space of five days. However, their injury-ravaged squad were able to stave off Arsenal's challenge on Saturday to ensure their progress to the next round of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win. United's team sheet from that day included seven defenders in the eleven, and with the number of casualties in the squad rising, it will be interesting who United line-up with against Marseille.

Manchester United have a brilliant defensive record in the Champions League this season, having conceded only one goal in their seven games. However, scoring has also not come freely, as they have scored seven, the least for any team still in the competition. Wayne Rooney has started hitting form, and will be integral for the team on Tuesday. After their fourth big game on the trot, United have relatively easier fixtures coming up, as they host Bolton Wanderers next, before travelling to Upton Park to face relegation-threatened West Ham United. So, Sir Alex Ferguson can take some chances with his team selection in midweek, armed with the knowledge that he will be able to rest any tired legs in the weeks to come.



Olympique Marseille:
Resurgent Marseille will look to be the first French team to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford and advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, a competition they last won 18 years back. Didier Deschamps has transformed the side into a strong, fighting unit, who can give any top European team a run for their money, and they are unlikely to be pushovers in this match against the mighty Manchester United. L'OM beat second placed Rennes at the weekend to close the gap between the top four teams in the league to just four points, after failing to capitalise on a great chance to improve their title hopes last weekend, as they lost at home to league leaders Lille.

The team will be without striker Brandao, after the Brazilian was given permission to go back to his native coutry after a 23-year old woman accused him of sexual assault. However, the side has been boosted by the return of Andre-Pierre Gignac, who missed the side's first leg encounter at home. More good news for the away side is the inclusion of Mathieu Valbuena to the travelling party. The 5'4" French dynamo has been instrumental in their recent successes and is a vital cog in the attacking third. Gabriel Heinze will be returning to Old Trafford for the first time since he left the club in 2007. The 2004-05 Manchester United player of the year, who recalls his time at the English club as a bigger experience than playing for Real Madrid, will play at left-back for the French champions.
Last year's Ligue 1 winners will resume their push for the title this weekend, when they host Paris Saint-Germain, before travelling to 19th placed Lens.
