Working conditions for construction workers in Nigeria is generally unsafe and unfit for 2020.
No consideration for health and safety, no insurance, no pension, to say the least.

Nobody should have to work under such conditions. Glad she’s trying to make a way for herself.

Although I do not wish that any of my daughters do this in other to survive (because I have paid the price for them during my time), I really appreciate this young girl in taking to this to help herself rather than taking to the vices of the day like some other girls.

As a young man, I got involved in menial jobs like this to support myself and make up the much I get from my parents because you can never get enough when you parents are civil servants and have to cater for more than 3 in the higher Institution at the same time plus some in the Secondary school, both Nuclear and Extended family members.

But it paid off, I used the opportunity to get exposed to Practical Civil and Building construction details, Domestic Electrical Wiring Installations. These helped me to survive even during my NYSC days.
Years later, I was able to use the skills acquired to build my own personal house, did the supervisions when I am available and disposed, was able to check mate my contractors and worker working for me and also carry out some Labour and Material quantities estimations when I was building my houses.

For a young lady, I will advise that she doesn't do it consistently as it is very stressful. She needs to skip some days to rest and recuperate, and quickly save money to venture into something less stressful like small scale poultry farm business, petty trading, etc. However, there is dignity in labour and through labour.

I have this woman that was part of the concrete casters when I was building my house, I picked interest in her because of her hard work and strength, she competes with the boys. When I confronted her, I was made to know that she was training her son in a school and told her son to stop the concrete work he was also doing with her, and go to school. This made me to always give her extra and also engage her in my little farm work with extra pay whenever I need help. She really enjoyed preferential treatment because of her hard work. She is a real mother.

It is very much better than prostitutions and robbery if it is the only available option at the time and place.
Today I am blessed with a job that fetches me over a million naira monthly on the average, I could comfortable and boldly talk or write about this my past without shame or fear, but If it were to be robbery or prostitution, no one would accept any allegation on it not to talk of willingly mentioning it due to the stigma, shame and fear.

May God continue to bless the works of our hands and channel our energy towards positive and productive ventures in Jesus name. Amen
