Soldiers Ambushed In Benue Were Confirmed Killed By Bandits. by oksmart: 10:17pm On Apr 08, 2021
On 5th April a team of four soldiers led by Captain AT Adedayo which were originally deployed in Katsina-Ala L.G.A and environs were on routine movement (with a GPMG(General purpose Machine Gun) and 2000 rounds of ammo) to joint operation location in Oju L.G.A which was also under Adedayo's command were ambushed in Konshisha by heavily armed bandits numbering about 150.
The troops in Oju on getting wind of what happened mobilized a rescue patrol of 7 soldiers led by Warrant Officer Solomon Augustine. The reinforcement on reaching Konshisha were also ambushed with information gathered from locals revealed that the bandits made away with the soldiers.
A joint operation was then initiated with air support from Makurdi for rescue operation and search of the ambushed officer and 11 soldiers. During the advance several contacts were made with the bandits who were in large numbers and opened fire on the advancing troops. Alot of the bandits were killed while several others scattered and fled in different directions. The troops continued the advance till night and at about 7.35pm on the 6th April with the help of a local informant the corpses of the ambushed officer and soldiers were found. Their bodies were burnt and dumped in a forest near a village called Gbinde in Konshisha LGA. The two hilux vans which conveyed the ambushed soldiers were also found burnt and their rifles including the GPMG with 2000 rounds were carted away by the bandits.
Clearance operation by the military is still ongoing.
