About Fish Farming by CrazyMan(m): 10:43am On Jul 10, 2007
Large-scale commercial culture of tilapia is limited almost exclusively to the culture of three species: Oreochromis niloticus, O. mossambica and O. aureus. Of the three tilapia species with recognized aquaculture potential, the Nile tilapia, O. niloticus, is by far the most commonly used species in fish farming.

Growout strategies for tilapia range from the simple to the very complex. Simple strategies are characterized by little control over water quality and food supply and by low fish yields. As greater control over water quality and fish nutrition are imposed, the production cost and fish yield per unit area increases. Across this spectrum, there is a progression from low to high management intensity.

In traditioanal pond culture of tilapia, proper environmental conditions are maintained by balancing the inputs of feed with the natural assimilative capacity of the pond. The pond’s natural biological productivity (algae, higher plants, zooplankton and bacteria) serves as a biological filter that converts the wastes through natural biological processes.

2007 alone, vietnam production of pangasius catfish was recorded at 380,000 metric tons, valued at 987 million US dollars. The explanation is that if vietnam who has almost the same maritime area with nigeria can produce this species of catfish alone, wht is disturbing nigeria.

I think you can make a comfortable living fish farming, but millionaire? Maybe if you own a fish farm the size of Wembley Stadium!

For any one considering fish farming be aware that it's a lot of hard hard work. If you don't get the right kind of fish, learn how to look after them properly, if you don't get the right person working for you or if plan on sitting back and expect things to happen without your input, your investment will be a waste of money.

Make sure you do your research very well before parting with your money.

Hello All,

We are a commercial aquaculture farm which started operation in 2007 located at Agura, Ikorodu, Lagos.
We specialise in qualitative mass production of Clarias frys, fingerlings, juveniles and table size fish up to 2kg and above.

We employ proven hatchery techniques (from extensive training) gathered from Royal Fish Benin
Current brood stocks for production all originates from Royal fish Benin.

We currently have for sale now several thousand fingerlings (about 20,000), and in 7 weeks several thousands juveniles.
There are a further several thousand fries that would be maturing to fingerlings and juveniles in 8 weeks and 12 weeks respectively.
We do batch production to have a continual supply of fingerlings and juveniles.

Prices are competitive dependent on quantity required.

Re: About Fish Farming by opes: 5:18am On Oct 09, 2011
@mishrekric, with good cultural management, you will need about 1.5 kilogram of feeds to produce 1 kilogram of catfish (if you are using artificial feeds).

It depends on whether  you're going to feed them a combination of imported floating feed and locally made feed.  If you start off with the imported feed. If you find they're gobbling up 3mm floating speed without much effort, then you can graduate to local feed, probably after a month or so.

Also depends on the breed of fish you have as well. You're looking at approximately N72,000, more or less.  Good luck.

Ah Bro Fhemmmy, them is loaded questions right there but I will answer a couple of them (I value my anonymity, I'm sure you understand  grin)

I'm involved in fish farming, amongst other things; we  have brick ponds which are good, but a pain when they develop problems.  I've actually visited a farm with earth ponds, my only concern about these was the location i.e. anyone could pass by and help themselves to the fish (plus they weren't being looked after well).  I've been told because of the toxins in the materials, plastic ponds aren't the best for long term breeding and rearing.
