aspabay: Oga, if the word restructuring is such a threat to your psyche, just settle down. It is simply a 'process' by which people sit down and negotiate solutions to intractable or long running problems that have refused to be solved. It draws responsibility closer to the people and gives the people more power to hold those with the responsibility culpable. Clearly there is an infrastructural challenge in Nigeria that the primary authorities cannot or have not handled since independence. Is it a cardinal sin to sit down and say for example, states take these roads and handle them, maintain them and we cede a percentage of Nigeria's earnings to assist you, or increase your allocations, or we give you the whole budget of the Federal Ministry of Works and then shut down that miserable Ministry for good.. Or if you cannot give them additional funds you permit them to raise capital or commercialise these facilities. This highway (and by the way Calabar is the only capital city in Nigeria served by a single lane highway even though it was long ago the defacto capital of the Niger area. Yet, it is serves the whole of the South-South, the South-East and North-Central from the ports and free trade zone, cement coming from Unicem and granite from Akamkpa. Thousands of heavy duty vehicles ply that one lane road every week all the way to Bayelsa, Onitsha, Ebonyi and beyond. If the owners of the road, the Federal government cannot recognise the huge potentials of that viability they should let it go, simple. No sentiment. I do not know the extent of Julius Bergers work since it is a year and a half since I last ventured there but at that time it was abandoned and disputed between government institutions and since I found the sea route more viable I simply fly into Uyo, motor down to Oron and sea cross to Calabar. And here you talk about Representatives as if they have budgets to fix roads or are able to speak up in a parliament that is pro Executive. 1 Like |

Governance is so easy in any nation where leadership is sensible. There is simply no need for this. Government's role in any society is one or organising people around values, period. If a collection of people can do a thing for themselves there is no need for them to be lorded over. If I were to be the President of Nigeria the only files coming across my table will concern Defence, Customs & Immigration and Macro Economics. What is my business with refineries, roads, bridges railways or rice farming. These are things ordinary citizens can handle themselves if resourced and empowered. We are just suffering from a very poorly structured entity called Nigeria. Put those infrastructure under the wheel of justice or the wheel of capitalism and see how they will work and prosper. |

Reference: You're blessed for this statement... The fact that Cross River(Calabar) has just one single lane highway linking Akwa Ibom & other Southern states with there being just a little fuss about it here, is what beats me. Given the concentration of M&C coys within that region and the continuous utilization of that road by heavy duty trucks, more should have been done before now. |

Its Cross River not Akwa Ibom State... Akwa Ibom govt once asked for partnership with Cross River State to repair road and make it a dual carriage, but CRS said no. So let them enjoy! letristian: |
