Nigeria Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has said it is going ahead with its planned nationwide indefinite strike by 8 00am today till its demands are met by the federal government.

NARD president, Dr. Uyilawa Okhuaihesuyi, who disclosed this on phone with our correspondent, said the government was yet to contact them, adding that there was no going back on the planned strike.

He said, “We know that government would say ‘no work, no pay’. We are ready for them this time around. We are tired of them promising us on paper without actualising them. Until our demands are met, we won’t call off the strike.”

Recall that NARD had suspended its 10-day-old indefinite strike on April 10, 2021, after it reached an agreement with the government where a Memorandum of Action (MOA) was signed at the instance of the minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige.

In a communique made available to LEADERSHIP, the association said, “After critical appraisal of the performance of both federal and state governments on all the issues affecting the welfare of our members as observed above and the insincerity of government in implementing the memorandum of action after 113 days, the NEC unanimously resolved by vote to resume the total and indefinite strike action from 08.00hrs Monday, 2nd August, 2021.”

embarassed embarassed The lifeless gworo chewing ghost doesn't care one bit, he will simply fly to London or West Germany for treatment whenever he is ill. The rest of the country can burn as far as he is concerned.

Going to strike isn't a problem... But having Buhari willing to listen to them is the main problem....

Their grievance will not gather any momentum as it'll only affect the poor masses while the rich will fly out of the country to get themselves treated for ordinary headaches....

Reasons why Resident doctors (NARD) hardly achieve anything when they go on strike.
1. They are not a labour group, resident doctors under the aegis of National Association of Resident Doctors are not members of any Labour Union, neither Trade Union Council nor Nigerian Labour Congress, hence they lack the negotiating powers of a trade union and the larger labour unions don't help them in solidarity during impasse or industrial actions.
2. They are under tutelage and not really major employees of federal government unlike consultants, NARD consists of doctors that are undergoing a learning process called residency towards becoming consultants in various medical fields (though they are the ones that do most medical jobs in Nigerian hospitals), this was what the labour minister Dr. Chris Ngige used against them the last time they went on strike, he simply told CMDs that the students have abandoned their schooling and they should find other students to take up the learning process. Fashola also did same during one of their numerous strikes in Lagos, he simply called for intake of new residents and they quickly returned to work.
3. For reasons I don't understand, their consultants do not support them.
