How You Can Save Yourself From Gambling Addiction Before Its Too Late by Senoiret(m): 11:39am On Aug 15, 2021
Good morning my fellow nairalanders and a wonderful Sunday to you all, you must have clicked this post out of curiosity and I can tell your are in the right place and the right frame if mind to do so, I know you must have been battling gambling addiction in one way or the other and after so much stern decision, swearing to yourself and cursing of not going back to gambling , you end up finding yourself loosing money in one of these booking shops in your street or on your way to work...

Trust me you are not alone in this in nigeria, there are many more people like you going through this nerve breaking addiction around the country which is very hard to break due to the thrills it gives you...

Before i go further I will give you the reason why you just can't stop despite the zeal wanting to stop, as human biology is channelled with neurons and nerve cells in the brain, there is a function in your body that releases dopamine...

What is dopamine?

Dopamine is more like neurotransmitter made in the brain. Basically, it acts as a chemical messenger between neurons in your brain, Dopamine is released when your brain is expecting a reward in a case when you place a bet on a game like virtual or colour expecting the outcome in your favour..

When you come to associate a certain activity with pleasure like gambling especially virtual and colour, mere anticipation may be enough to raise dopamine levels. It could also be a certain food, sex, shopping, or just about anything else that you enjoy.

For example, you where supposed to go to work, along the way you saw a betting banner on your way to work, Your brain may increase dopamine when you see them with the hope you might win something to increase the money with you, when actually in reality you really never wanted to go and knowing well with full assurance you might loose the money with you, When you enter that betting shop, the flood of dopamine rush into your nervous system, acts to reinforce this craving and focus on satisfying your emotions in the future.

It’s a cycle of motivation, reward, and reinforcement.

where it gets more funny for addictive gamblers is when you have high levels of dopamine individually, it can make you feel on top of the world, at least for a while. It can also put you into serious overdrive which is a major factor for breaking addiction control, it's more or less like your brain taking over your brain in some biological way.....

it's the same reason and psychology behind people who find it difficult to quit smoking and drinking....

In excess, it may be a contributing factor in many bad habits people exhibits in one way or the other.

It is based on this neurology going on in your brain, betting companies are using to prey on their customers and every gambling outlet because it is more than difficult to cure the sensation out of your brain....

And you must know you can never outwit a betting company with that little illusion playing korean series in your head you're going to win millions one day, how you'll buy your imaginary car and shut those who are abusing you, you're never going to win millions one day, trust me that day will never come....

The algorithm works in such a way that you can never beat them, you just can't, especially when it comes to virtual games, you always come back when ever you win, even when you win and leave, the neural activity going on in your brain will always prompt you to go back to play which at the end you end up loosing your money....

So many fine men and a low percentage of women have lost their lives to gambling, many people ran away from home, lost their home, jobs and trust from their families and friend, people who had so much and excess has been reduced to nothing with the advent in gambling.....

I can assure you it's the biggest addiction you can ever get into, as it robs you of financial prosperity at anytime you try to stop, sometimes I feel smoking is even better to gambling as someone who smokes can still manage to feel normal at all a strict occasion....

Visit many betting outlets on a day you choose and you'll see many living dead people, people who are in so much mess they can't speak their predicament and living in that silence because of shame and the feeling of being stupid after loosing all their money to baby....

And if you see anybody coming up with an argument they are not loosing since they have been betting, they are sore liars, they are either drenched in debt trying to lure more people into their dungeon of addiction or they are in need of money under the pretense of fixed game or sure odd....They are living in silence of debts and agony just like every other gamblers...

Haven't you woken up one day and ask yourself why more betting shops and agencies keep opening their company around each corner in every street in nigeria especially lagos where they have wrecked many youths life.....

No matter how you think you are disciplined , once it overwhelms you, it takes grace of God to set you free and your true dedication to break free....

According to Gam Care, below are some signs to show gambling has become a problem or serious addiction for you:

1. Your spending has become uncontrollable, you discover you go to the extent of borrowing money from people or using up your life’s savings to gamble everyday, then there is a problem of addiction. If something is done for fun, it should not drain you financially, in fact, if possible, you can make money from it. When your spending is uncontrolled, then it is time to stop.

2. You’re spending significant time gambling rather than spending time to do significant things for yourself, you will rather gamble away your time, then a problem is around the corner. When you find yourself wasting time meant for development on gambling, then it has become an addiction and you should seek help.

3. You’re concealing or lying about gambling behaviour
You are not bold enough to tell people what you are doing or where you are going, that means you are doing something bad and such should be stopped.

4. Also, you find yourself drifting away from your family and friends because you are either gambling or avoiding the backlash that comes from your family due to the habit, then, it is time to stop.

5. You have no apparent interests or leisure pursuits
Everything that interests you before you started gambling now interests you no more, no more apparent interests or leisure pursuit, it is time you knew you are addicted and need help. It is not easy to overcome addictions, however, with the right company around you, you will pull through.

Addictions are not something you can easily overcome, however, when you think about the negative effects and how it is slowing down your growth, what opportunity might come your way if you had not gamble the money meant to make you a better life,

Also you might give seeking therapy help a shot and a psychologist but all these won't work unless you have a really strong determination to stop and end everything once and for all.... These are some hardcore steps to strip yourself of this demon if you really want to....

1. Admittance

The first step is to admit you're an addictive gambler, this admittance would calm your ego and make you reflect on all the good things you can still achieve with your life if you stop.

2. Loosing control of your financial capacity

Look for a friend or someone who understands you better to take control of your finances with strict instruction with regards to how money can be discharged to you and when money is given to you , it has to be for a specific reason under monitoring...this will help you reduce the urge to reduce the play...

3. Close all your betting account online

Another great step from your gambling addiction is to close all your account and and thing that can reference gambling within your ecosystem.... have the shop owner ban you from placing bet in their shop, insist on thorough disgrace if you attempt to and don't go out alone....

4. Engage yourself with something else

To take away your mind from gambling , you need to take away your mind and engage yourself with something meaningful like sports, taking your job serious, reading books, watching a series or picking something that thrills you before you picked gambling as an ADDICTION.

5. Be closer to God.
Many people don't realize this, but when you truly involve yourself with God in any form of religious function you might be in distracts you from these acts and make you more useful to yourself, engage in outreach and bible gatherings, go to mosques regularly and talk to ain imam or pastor of your condition, this will alert your mind people are watching you making you gradually reduce your habit with time...
