the present condition of Afghanistan will happen to Nigeria very very soon if you all don't support the movement to end Nigeria now.

People who clamour to live under religious injunction, written over multiple centuries ago should watch handmaid's tale series. Watching it will jolt them back to see the beauty of modern laws and ways

All these pictures of Afghanistan in the 1960s show a very very tiny privileged minority of women in Kabul.

The vast majority of women, even back then, lived in even worse conditions. Most of the country was poor and lacking communications.

Infact the pictures are very very misleading.

If you want women's lib in any country, you have to get a critical mass of the female population to support it. Not a tiny minority of university educated women most of whom would probably leave the country when they get the chance.

Anyway it was a much liberal country before the Islamist seized power supported by these same Americans, all because of the Cold War with the USSR.

75% of the world population are mentally blindfolded by religion and politics... Cataract is a learner where those two are.... Politicians best tools to deceive people is religion.... Either they use Muslim as president and pick Christan as next or vice.... It's not because they love the two religion.... But to get votes from them. Most of the politicians don't believe in God....

Biden got it right with Afghanistan.

Remaining there will amount to wasting American Soldiers, Resources and endless wars when the outcome will always be the same. Afghan soldiers and people gave up without a fight, so why should expect others to fight for them after 20 wasted years.

As a wiseman once said " It is time to go home"

All Muslims support Islamic Rule.

All these hypocrites still rush to Islamic country like UAE, Emirates like Afghanistan.

Saudi wealth covers up for the strict compliance. While their women still have the opportunity to travel out for vacation

Indonesia and Malaysia don't follow the strict code

It was not a liberal country. It was a largely conservative country with a tiny educated and secular population who were not enough to make much of a difference.

It is also a country that does not like foreigners telling them what to do. So, when the USSR invaded and tried to secularize the country by force, people rebelled. And the rebellion grew simply because most of the people did not subscribe to the secular agenda of the USSR and Marxisim.

(Yes the Americans helped. The enemy of my enemy is my firend).

Infact the only way such countries can change is 1) either they get colonial rule for a very long enough time for the colonizer to build an very large enough educated and secular elite or 2) they get a Kemal Attaturk, or the leader of Egypt in the early part of the 19th century who is ready to do what it takes including massacares, to create a large enough secular population.

And that is Afghanistan's problem . There have never been enough secularists to make a difference, unlike in Turkey, Egypt, and even Algeria and Pakistan.

That is why the picture is misleading. It is like me showing pictures of Banana Island and saying this is how 90% of Nigerians live.

Where did you see me mention any predominant Islamic nation as a failed nation? Iran, Turkey etc are Islamic nations and capable of matching any developed nation shoulder to shoulder

Malaysia and Indonesia have constitutions that recognises people of other faiths. You will find churches in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Do you think it is right to force liberal minded people like me to live under such laws with you?

Fact of the matter is Afghanistan was on an upward trajectory....just like most other countries at the time, recently freed from the shackles of colonialism.

i'm sure its contemporaries at the time -like Singapore, UAE, India, Nigeria, ect- would have had similar developmental scenarios and wealth distribution!

It will ultimately, but by then Biafra would have either broken away or would use the momentum to break free.

There is a renewed Islamic uprising in the North, with Kano as its epicenter. All these hisbah activities, sharia, attempts at stopping women from driving etc are its manifestations. Boko Haram is their militant wing and just like Taliban, they will eventually overrun the North East and North West and afterwards capture Abuja.

All these will happen in the next five years!

At that time Afghanistan was and had never been colonized. (The UK tried twice, and got thrown out twice). It was a mass of tribes held together by a king, who just happened to be the strongest guy on the block.

The last king tried some modernizing (it was under his regime that those photos were taken) but he got overthrown in 1973 because the reforms were not moving fast enough according to the guy who overthrew him. The new guy too tried to speed things up...and began angering the conservative majority.

Then in 1978, the guy who overthrew the king then got overthrown by the Communists, who then promptly split into two factions that fought each other until the strongest one won (with soviet help...ie with KGB special forces help). Meanwhile conservative forces staged an uprising, which made the communists call for Soviet help, which the Soviets responded by sending in troops...which only angered the conservatives more.

Then the Americans who wanted to have their revenge on the Soviets for Vietnam, stepped in with aid to the conservative forces...and the rest is history.

Afghanistan was not on an upward trend. What people do with those pictures is like me showing pictures of life in a rich GRA area of this country online and saying that this is how all Nigerians live. You and I know it is not true.

And how was literacy levels overall in Afghanistan. By 1979, it was just 19%. 19%
