@SEFAGO, you read ALL the star wars books? wow; i've read quite a few myself but not up to half; the kid that wrote Eragon is Christopher Paolini; funny thing is a lot of pple criticised his books that he copied too many elements from Lord of the Rings and Star wars |

Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain series is pretty good. . . read it as a kid and still liked it now rereading it as an adult. He also has this book called The Remarkable Journey of Prince Jen that I liked. Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series, I've read most of but really disliked. It felt too much like a ripoff of Wheel of Time. I also kind of dislike JRR Tolkien's work past the Hobbit, lol. His writing style is boring as hell, imo. I read the books and recognize their impact on the genre, but most of them aren't fun to reread. @SEFAGO: Yeah, nuts about the stuff. @Oyb: You should definitely pursue it if you have some good ideas. Just start writing a little bit every week. @aletheia: I'll try that at some point this summer when I have time. I'm sure I'll be able to find it on BitTorrent or something. |

Nice Thread! It's good to see like minded Fantasy and Sci-Fi Novel fans here on Nairaland. It's places like this that I can say things like "I prefer reading sci fi and fantasy novels to watching the movies made from them" and not get mobbed or looked at as a weirdo. My Favorite Sci-fi and Fantast Authors (in no particular order, and the ones I can remember on short notice): Brandon Sanderson - My current best fantasy series (Mistborn) was written by this guy and I have yet to find a series that matches up to this. If you've not read Mistborn Trilogy, you haven't read fantasy, PERIOD. Also his new series, The Stormlight Archive is shaping up to be an epic or even greater calibre that The Wheel of Time. George R R Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire) Epice writing with brutal honesty. There are no heroes in this guys books, just people with different motives and points of view Stephen King - The Dark Tower Series Isaac Asimov - The Foundation Series Neil Gaiman - American Gods Orson Scott Card - Ender's Game Robert Jordan - The Wheel of Time (Spent 6 months of my life reading through books 1-10 of this series while struggling with final year project and exams) Anne Rice - The Vampire Chronicles J K Rowling - Harry Potter Series Douglas Adams - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Peter V Brett - The Demon Series Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman - The Deathgate Cycle, The Dragonlance Series Frank Herbert - Dune Series Steven Erikson - Malazan Books of the Fallen (currently reading book 3 of this series, very complex stuff) Alan Dean Foster - Flinx Series Anthony Piers - Apprentice Adept Series, Incarnations of Immortality, Pornucopia Series R A Salvatore - All his novels relating to Drizzt J R Tolkien - The Lord of the Rings Plus a few other series based on big franchises like Star Wars, Halo, Warhammer, Starcraft, Warcraft, Diablo, Resident Evil, Gears of War, Star Trek Thats all I can recall for now. Used to have a large ebook library with all these book and more (over 2 Gb) but a recent hard drive crash has left me with almost nothing. |

@SEFAGO, you read ALL the star wars books? wow; i've read quite a few myself but not up to half; the kid that wrote Eragon is Christopher Paolini; funny thing is a lot of pple criticised his books that he copied too many elements from Lord of the Rings and Star wars Yeah I did. Star Wars was my favorite series until it got kind of sad and everyone started dying especially my favorite characters. Yeah Eragon and its sequels do copy Lord of the Rings and Star Wars completely. Its like stark and shameless plagiarism. Eragon wasn't that bad. But the next 3 books or so was just terrible . Like it would be impossible not to see links between LOTR and Star Wars. As for LOTR being boring. I would agree with you on that. Its probably due to the style of writing at that time when Tolkien wrote and he did not expect his audience to be little children actually. The Silmarillion is even more boring in prose and feels like a history book. So Tolkien's style was more of the mature kind and reflective of the writing style of his time. |

My people! So we get plenty fans of Sci-Fi and Fantasy like this, see how I dey smile. Azanor's list is almost exactly like what I would have posted except for one absence: Peter Hamilton - This guy is the modern day Asimov, great sci-fi concepts married to brillant characters spanning mega generations and he can write a great action scene! Please gp and read his Night Dawn Triology first, then the Commonwealth trilogy and the latest Void trilogy. Awesome stuff. George RR Martin is for me king of Fantasy but he is too slow in writing and needs to focus before he dies. Best family motto by far is "We do not sow" that is just badass. Scott Bakker and the thousandfold thought is also another awesome book I love me some Robin Hobb Terry Goodking is a hack jare, one averagely good book folllowed by one boring one etc. I am on number 8 or something and it is dragging. Tolkien = Snorefest, tried twice to read LOTR and failed twice! |

Definitely Robert Jordan, though the books are hard to get and BS seems headed for an anticlimax. Liked Lamour too and a few others but the WoT series takes it for me any day. |

Vieira:^ Worth it! Great read. Though Sanderson doesn't seem to have quite captured the essence of RJ's writing. |

Is Jordan's wheel of time really worth it peeps? or is he a hack like Goodking?

believe me, Wheel of Time is a good read any day. i only had access to 1-9, but when i laid eyes on 10-11, i practically went ballistic! another author who takes the prize is Stephen Lawhead, particularly with his Song of Albion and Pendragon trilogies-his story telling prowess is simply out of this world. |

But first I need to know if you will be reading them on a laptop/desktop PC or an ebook device so I can adjust the pages accordingly during the conversion process. I 'll include the Dragons of Winter &c as well. . .soon as I hear from you. |
