UEFA announced the Champions League groups at the draw conducted in Istanbul, Turkey, in August. Fans quickly tagged some clubs as underdogs and some others as heavy favorites to qualify from each group.

Some big clubs did not disappoint in delivering the goods expected in the first games of the round. But some others have left football fans perplexed as to how they couldn't live up to expectations.

Here are the four most shocking results in the first round of the group stages that refused to go as anticipated:

1. Young Boys 2 - 1 Manchester United
Many punters had predicted this fixture as an automatic win and a brace or hattrick-scoring game for Cristiano Ronaldo, after his brace in his last league game against Newcastle United in the weekend.

Ronaldo scored United's only goal early in the game. But Aaron Wan Bissaka's 35th-minute red card meant that Young Boys could cause a dramatic upset, as they scored two second-half goals to defeat the Red Devils in the nick of time.

2. Sheriff 2 - 0 Shakhtar Donetsk
FC Sheriff became the first Moldovan club to play in the UEFA Champions League group stages and then represented the country's league well in its first game of the most prestigious European club tournament. Despite being away, this should have been a win or draw result for Shakhtar, but they just weren't at their best.

3. Atletico Madrid 0 - 0 Porto
Atletico Madrid did not maximize the opportunity to begin their Champions League campaign this season on a high. Atletico was home against a weaker Porto side, and fans were anticipating at least a one-goal win, as usual. But Simeone's boys left fans disappointed. In a group with AC Milan and Liverpool, Atletico might regret not taking three points in this game.

4. Club Brugge 1 - 1 PSG
This game was Lionel Messi's first start and the second game for his new club, PSG. Despite playing the full 90 minutes, the Argentine captain could barely produce any magic. He even got booked for a foul that looked motivated by frustration towards the end of the game.

Many hopes are resting on this PSG team to dazzle, with the Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe-led attack something fans dreamt for all through the transfer window. Pochettino must now ensure his star-studded team delivers in matches like this.
