DARPA and the US Air Force successfully flight-tested new hypersonic weapon technology last week.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the US Air Force successfully completed last week the first free flight test of new scramjet-powered hypersonic weapon technology - the Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC).

During testing, an unidentified aircraft carried the Raytheon-built system under its wing. After it was released, the HAWC accelerated to supersonic speeds with the help of a solid rocket motor.

Then the Northrop Grumman scramjet engine, which relies on oxygen from the atmosphere rather than an oxygen tank, kicked in, allowing the system to reach hypersonic speeds above Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound.

"All primary test objectives were met,"
The HAWC is a defense project aimed at developing technologies for an air-launched hypersonic cruise missile.

Andrew Knoedler, the HAWC program manager in DARPA's Tactical Technology Office, said in a statement that "the HAWC free flight test was a successful demonstration of the capabilities that will make hypersonic cruise missiles a highly effective tool for our warfighters."

"This brings us one step closer to transitioning HAWC to a program of record that offers next generation capability to the US military," he added.

Colin Whelan, vice president of Advanced Technology at Raytheon Missiles & Defense, called the test a "history-making moment," stating that "this success paves the way for an affordable, long-range hypersonic system in the near term to strengthen national security."

The HAWC was first expected to fly late last year, but the test was upended by unspecified testing issues, Air Force Magazine reported last December.

The HAWC is one of several hypersonic weapons efforts within the Department of Defense. Others include systems like the US Air Force's AGM-183A Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW), which has failed twice in testing.

This system, which is being developed by Lockheed Martin, relies on a hypersonic boost-glide vehicle system rather than a scramjet like the HAWC.

Hypersonic weapons systems are a key area of competition between the US, Russia, and China.

While slower than a ballistic missile, hypersonic missiles are faster than cruise missiles, and they can maneuver along unpredictable flight paths, giving the weapons the ability to evade enemy defenses.

They achieved this without making noise like Russia

Russia is making noise because they want the US to spend a lot of money finding competing solutions on hypersonics to the detriment of other areas.

I believe though they (Russians) are currently leading the world in hypersonic tech. How soon the US can catch up?. May be less than two years. Russia already believes the US has compromised some of their scientists and engineers and taken hold of some aspects of the tech

Oh the USA don’t make noise?
The USA show of force is called what?
Carry Aircraft carriers to attack defenceless Nations are called what?
USA only make noise on things they have.

Russia is the world leader on Rocket science, that even South Korea home-made defence missiles are built by Russia companies

The USA have been trying to build it since 2013 but the missiles kept failing and worst thing for the USA was China got the missiles before them.

These tests were the first successful test of this class of weapons since 2013, according to the Pentagon. Hypersonic weapons developers in the United States have successfully tested hypersonic weapons at low altitudes and small dimensions.
