FATHER MARRIES OFF 12-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER, COLLECTS HP LAPTOP AS BRIDE PRICE

A father, Oyefeso Saheed, has been remanded for giving out his 12-year-old daughter in marriage. He allegedly collected a HP laptop as bride price. On Monday, Mr Saheed was remanded by a family court at the Oke-Kura Correctional Centre in Ilorin for the act. Magistrate Shade Lawal also ordered the remand of the victim’s purported husband, Ismail Lawal, 32, before adjourning the case till Wednesday for further mention.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sergeant Akinijide Adisa, said that the matter was reported at the Adewole Police Station by Aishat Temem, a member of the state branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA). He said that the matter was reported after the complainant had received a call from the victim’s school principal.

The prosecutor also told the court that the purported husband gave the victim a HP laptop as the bride price for the marriage. He then prayed to the court to order the remand of the two defendants on the basis that the offence they allegedly committed were non-bailable. The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

NASARAWA BUSINESSMAN ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED DEFILEMENT OF 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL

A 24-year-old businessman, Samuel Mathew, has been arrested by the Nasarawa State Agency for Youths Empowerment Scheme for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl. The General Manager of NAYES, Abdullahi Maina, stated this on Tuesday while parading the suspect at the command headquarters in Lafia, the state capital.

He explained that Mathew was caught by some residents where he allegedly had carnal knowledge of the minor, who sold Madidi, a local Hausa food. Maina said, “When I spoke to the suspected rapist, he was trying to deny that he raped the young girl. She was bleeding heavily when she was brought to our office, so we quickly took her to the primary health care centre, where she was examined and it was confirmed that she was actually raped. They had to stitch her and later they demanded that the suspect be brought for examination to know if he was HIV free or not. The test was conducted and he was HIV free.”

The suspect, Mathew, a shop owner who claimed to be 24 years old, denied the allegation. He said, “I was in my shop and then I saw the girl selling Madidi. I called her to come and give me Madidi and I asked her if she had N1000 change, but she said no. I observed that her eyes were red and I didn’t know what happened, so I asked her to go. As she was leaving my shop, she started crying. People were sitting outside and when they asked her what the problem was, she said that I closed her mouth and raped her and people came in and concluded that I raped her, but I am innocent.”

The victim’s uncle, Abbas Ibrahim, accused Mathew of raping his niece and inflicting severe injuries on her private parts, which made her lose a lot of blood. “He called my niece and told her he wanted to buy Madidi. My niece stood at the door, but the suspect insisted that she come inside the shop. When she got in, he took a piece of cloth and covered her mouth so that even if she shouted, people would not hear and he raped her in his shop. I am appealing to the government and security agencies to help me so that my niece can get justice”, he added.

A nurse who attended to the victim at a primary health centre, Aisha Ibrahim, said she examined her and confirmed that she was raped.

PASTOR STEPHEN KALU JAILED FOR LIFE OVER RAPE

Justice Peter Kekemeke of the FCT High Court, Nyanya, on Wednesday sentenced a 29-year-old Pastor Stephen Kalu to life imprisonment for raping a 17-year-old girl. The convict, a preacher at Adoration Ministry, Karshi, Abuja, was arraigned before the court by the police on a two-count charge of rape on 16th October, 2019.

The police said the convict had sex with a 17-year-old girl on October 28, 2018 at his residence in Karshi, Abuja, without her consent. They said this was contrary to section 31(1) of the Child’s Right Act and punishable under section 31(2) of the same Act. Delivering judgment in the matter, Kekemeke held that the prosecuting counsel, Donatus Abah, had proved his case beyond reasonable doubt.

He added that the defendant admitted that he slept with the girl several times, resulting in a pregnancy and the birth of a baby girl. The judge held further that although the defendant promised to marry her, the offence had been committed already and the law must take its course. Kekemeke ruled that count two was not relevant and convicted the defendant on count one, which contravened section 31(1) of the Child’s Right Act. “The defendant is found guilty on count one and accordingly convicted,” the judge ruled.

In sentencing the defendant, Kekemeke said that the section he was charged attracted a punishment of life imprisonment. “Our society, especially this division of the court, has seen several cases of rape. It is a pathetic situation, the system must be expunged of rapists. Our children need protection from our courts. The law is already there, the same defendant committed a similar offence of rape while on bail, during the period of this case.

“He is a danger to our children, I have no choice, the defendant is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment”, he ruled.

WOMAN LOCKS UP FIVE-YEAR-OLD FOR SIX MONTHS IN LAGOS

The police in Lagos State have arrested a 43-year-old woman, Sharon Williams, for allegedly locking up and assaulting her five-year-old nephew, Michael Ibiyome, for six months. Ibiyome lived with the suspect in Gberigbe community, in the Ikorodu area of the state.

PUNCH Metrol learnt that the suspect allegedly used a cutlass to inflict injuries on the back of Ibiyome’s head. It was gathered that a neighbor reported the matter to the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs, which transferred the case to the State Ministry of Youths, Sports and Social Development. Our correspondent was told that the suspect was arrested around 8pm on Wednesday at her residence.

The Lagos State Deputy Coordinator for Child Protection, Lateef Akinborode, said it took about five hours for the suspect to surrender herself for arrest after security agencies tried to gain access into her apartment. He said, “The boy was denied access to education, feeding health care, love, affection and free movement. We were there yesterday (Wednesday) for five hours before we were able to rescue the boy after several attempts to gain access into the house of the perpetrator with the support of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Ijede, and the Nigeria Police Force, Area N, Ijede. She eventually opened the door and she was arrested.

“The boy was found behind a fridge in the sitting room with a very deep cut on his head and several injuries on his body. His hands were already stiff as a result of being tied up for too long. He was rescued and is currently receiving treatment at the Ijede General Hospital.”

Our correspondent learnt that the suspect was taken to the Ijede Police State. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, did not take his calls or respond to a text message sent to him on the incident as of the time of filing this report.

WOMAN NABBED FOR ASSAULTING 10-YEAR-OLD HOUSEBOY IN LAGOS

A woman, identified simply as Onyebuchi, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly maltreating her 10-year-old houseboy, identified only as Daniel, in the Bode Thomas area of the State. Punch Metro gathered that Onyebuchi sent Daniel to get fuel for her, but while on his way, a yet to be identified good Samaritan approached the boy when he saw him writhing in pain from the injuries he sustained during an alleged maltreatment by the woman.

While being questioned by the Good Samaritan, Daniel said in a footage posted on instagram, “They used sticks to beat me,” but when asked who was responsible for his condition, he said, “One person, who is aunt.” He added that he had not eaten that day.

However, it was learnt that the Good Samaritan gave Daniel N1,000 to buy food and reported the incident to the representative of a non-governmental organization, the Auntlanda Bethel Foundation, which informed the police so that the boy could be rescued. When the foundation’s representations, led by one Dr. Yolanda Angel-David, visited Onyebuchi’s residence on Chief Natufe Street, off Babs Animashaun, Bode Thomas, she was seen in another footage denying that she maltreated Daniel.

She was heard saying, “I was not the one that beat him; he has been with me for one month as they just brought him for me. I can show you his pictures; they just brought him for school. It is not me that brought him from the North, but he is living with me. I gave him Malt this morning.”

However, while being questioned at Onyebuchi’s residence, Daniel said he had been staying with her for a month, adding that he was beaten for collecting N1,000 from the Good Samaritan. The minor said “I came last month; I came to this house to school. My mum has died but my father is in the village. I am from Jos. They beat me when I went to buy fuel. They beat me because somebody stopped me on the road and gave me N1,000.

It was learnt that personnel of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba, arrested Onyebuchi for allegedly abusing the minor. A source told Punch Metro that the injuries sustained by Daniel were so severe that he could not sit on his buttocks. The source said, “The woman (Onyebuchi) has been arrested; she abused the boy to the point that he could not sit on his buttocks. His hands were also swollen and he has been taken to hospital for treatment.

“The boy is a domestic worker to the woman; her relative in the village sent him to her and she had been using him as a domestic worker. Although the woman denied beating him, the boy kept accusing her of beating him.” The State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejuobi, confirmed the incident, adding that Onyebuchi had been arrested and investigation into the incident was ongoing.

“It is a case of child abuse/child labour, assault and torture of a 10-year-old boy. It was reported at the Bode Thomas Division and transferred to the gender unit of the SCIID, Panti. The female suspect is still in custody. She was arrested yesterday (Wednesday). The case is under investigation,” Adejobi stated.

WOMAN ARRESTED FOR BEATING DAUGHTER TO DEATH IN OGUN STATE

Men of the Ogun State Police command have arrested a 45-year-old woman, Kafayat Lawa, for beating her 17-year-old daughter, Ayomide Adekoya to death. A statement released by DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, spokesperson of the state police command, says the suspect was arrested following a piece of information received by the DPO Ogijo Division Headquarters, CSP Mohammed Suleman Baba at about 2.30pm that the suspect locked her two daughters in a room where she beat and injured them with broken bottle.

Upon the information, the DPO mobilized his men and moved to the scene where the two victims were rescued and taken to hospital for treatment before one of them gave up the ghost. The suspect was then arrested and taken to custody. On interrogation, the suspect who claimed to have separated from her husband nine years ago informed the police that her two daughters left home during the Salah and didn’t return till the following day.

This infuriated her, and when she wanted to beat them, people around pleaded on their behalf and she left them, only for them to go out again the following day and passed the night outside. It was the annoyance that made her lock them inside and injured them both with broken bottle. The older one Blessing Adekoya, 19 was injured in the hand, while her younger sister Ayomide was stabbed in the chest and unfortunately gave up the ghost while receiving treatment.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Edward Awolowo Ajogun, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and diligent prosecution.

The use of a child for the purpose of begging for alms, prostitution, domestic or sexual labour, as a slave or practices similar to slavery, forced or compulsory labour or for any purpose that deprives the child of the opportunity to attend and remain in school is a crime and it attracts imprisonment for a term of 10 years.

Employing any person under 18 years as domestic help outside his home or family environment is a crime that attracts 5 years imprisonment.

Anybody who has sexual intercourse with a child less than 18 years will be convicted to imprisonment for life.

Exposing or involving a child in the use of narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances is an offence liable to life imprisonment.

Every form of child abuse is a serious offence that is punishable by the law. Every child has the right to be free from every form of abuse.

Report any cases of child abuse to the Nigeria Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), your state Ministry of Women and Children Affairs or any NGO (Non-governmental Organisation) that advocates for the rights of children. If you notice any form of child abuse and you do not report, you are as guilty as the person committing the crime. Let’s join our hands to make the world a better place for children to live and grow.
