I Was Condemned For Returning ₦100,000 Forgotten By Passenger – Tricyclist by Niece: 9:08pm On Oct 25, 2021

A Kaduna based tricycle operator identified as Ayuba Yusuf, who returned ₦100,000 forgotten by a passenger, has narrated how some members of the public condemned him for returning the money to the owner.

The tricyclist who is a Diploma holder in Public Administration disclosed that although few people commended him, a lot more scolded him for being ‘foolish’ for returning such amount in this ‘time of hardship’.

Narrating how it happened, the tricycle operator said on 19th October, a lady with children flagged him at exactly 6.45 pm, barely 15 minutes to when the tricyclist must be off the road for the day.

“I told her it was late but she pleaded with me to help her, as she had some small children, and was probably returning from a trip.

“Out of pity, I obliged, and at great risk, after which she paid her fare and I left hurriedly to beat the 7 pm closing time fixed by the state government.

“But upon reaching home, I saw a bag forgotten in my tricycle, apparently belonging to the woman, and upon opening same, saw some clothing materials, cosmetics, and money, which I decided not to touch,” he narrated.

Yusuf, aged 44, and father of four children, said he drew the attention of his wife and they both resorted to listening to the radio to hear if the owner would sponsor an announcement.

“My wife later heard an announcement on the missing bag through Liberty Radio, Kaduna, and drew my attention, after which I returned the items, including the money.

“The woman was so elated that she gave me ₦10,000 out of the money, which I rejected, but she insisted that I should accept same.

“Some people at the station intervened by insisting that I accept the gift, which I did reluctantly by collecting only ₦4,000, and giving some others at the scene, N6,000 to share,” he said.

Yusuf, who took to the commercial tricycle transportation business for lack of a white-collar job upon graduation, explained that the tricycle he was riding belonged to someone else and that his weekly returns to the owner, was ₦15,000.

He said his greatest disappointment was that while some people lauded his sense of honesty, a lot more castigated him for, in their words, being “foolish enough to return such amount of money in this hard times”.

That's what moral decadence could cause.

It takes lot determination to try being different in this moral turpitude age.

I am not surprised that this gentleman with integrity was scolded for returning money that does not belong to him. The moral decadence in Nigeria is nothing to write home about.

In this life, just do what is right and forget what people will talk. There's always a curse when you take what does not belongs to you.

Those who condemned u are Criminals in their hearts.

They just haven’t gotten the opportunity to commit the crimes. undecided

This is part of the reason we have criminal politicians. They came from us and we are the criminals.

Society filled with criminals will be ruled by criminals.

If you didn't return the money and the police nab him, the same people will call him thief. This goes a long way to show how low this country has gone. Some will see what belong to other people and call it God's favour

Just imagine! shocked
We have some corrupt people in this nation,
Just imagine what the public are saying for a honest act such as this.
Shameless corrupt souls everywhere shocked

*HOME TRUTH*

*On every level, Nigerians are the problem of Nigeria*.
Read along to understand our reasons for saying so......

I run a manufacturing business and a trading business.
The biggest challenge in my manufacturing business is not power, or infrastructure, the biggest challenge is getting honest staff.
Everyone we hire appears to be on a mission to steal as much as possible.
Inflated invoices, recording less than the actual number of units produced.
The worst part of it all is that all the fraud we've uncovered is not done by a single person, it's usually many staff who collude with each other, from production, to sales, to finance, even top management.
There was a year I overhauled management 3 times in a year.........
But me, I've found a solution sha, I now use Indian management.
So competent, so honest and so straightforward.
I thought they were expensive at first with all the visa fees, accommodation, house staff, but now that losses due to staff theft have been reduced to a minimum, and efficiency increased, the Indian management has turned out to be cheaper than the previous Nigerian management.
Now, all sensitive positions involving money go to Indians. Nigerians are only allowed in non-sensitive positions.
I used to criticize companies like Dangote Group that hire so many Indians when there are many unemployed Nigerians, but now, I understand their decision.

My biggest challenge in the trading business is the same, getting honest staff.
The form of trading occurs in the open market, and involves staff having access to huge sums of money running into a few millions.
I know how much I pay to security companies to provide escorts for the staff, not to prevent robbery, but to ensure that the staff go straight to the bank to deposit the money after the day's sales and not disappear with my money.
This money spent on security companies is even enough to be declared as profitWe have to spend on CCTV, biometric scanners and other things that wouldn't be needed if staff weren't looking for the slightest opportunity to steal.

It got so bad at a point that my main criteria for employing staff was no longer competency but honesty.
At least, competency and skills can be learnt, but once you're dishonest, you're dishonest.

We always complain of the economy and how there are no jobs. I know people abroad who would have loved to set up job creating businesses in Nigeria but they can't because they can't get any trustworthy person to run it.

I know people in Nigeria with so much money, they want to start factories and other job-creating businesses but they can't because they are occupied elsewhere and can't get any trustworthy person to run the business.
So instead of investing in the real sector and creating jobs, they'll just buy treasury bills, while the thieves are shouting no jobs.

Many big businesses would have been born in Nigeria if we could engage in partnerships, but we cant because you can't trust anyone.
This is one advantage the Indians and Lebanese have over us in Nigeria.
They can pull resources together and do mega-business, unlike Nigerians that because only one person must do everything since we can't partner, end up with small, tiny businesses.

Start a poultry and they will be stealing your eggs. Some will even go ahead to be killing the chickens so that they'll be allowed to take them home.

Start an entertainment/viewing/game center and they'll be pocketing your money.
On the days you're around at the business, the money realized will be x10 of the money realized when you're not around..... Because they're eating your money.

Lease out a vehicle to a driver to use and watch as he'll finish you.

Start a restaurant, the same thing will happen. More than half of the total food ingredients will end up in their personal kitchens.

Even ordinary provisions shop, they will find a way to steal.

You'll see them with that their evil, wicked saying "na where person dey work, na there e dey chop, na e make dem dey callam workchop/workshop"...... Just imagine, justifying theft at work.

And you'll see these people point their crooked fingers at politicians when they're not any different.
I usually say the reason most Nigerians haven't stolen billions of government money, is simply lack of opportunity
.

Again,
*On every level, Nigerians are the problem of Nigeria*.

I want us to discuss how this narrative can change.
As I speak there are several Nigerians here and institutional investors who would love to invest in Nigeria but the character of Nigerians on the global stage has been a drawback.

There are also franchises from Agriculture to Automobiles who wish to enter the Nigerian Market but holding back because of this.

Cc : Coach.

OgaRico:

This stealing thing is so bad that no age is exempted. There is nothing like the old ones are the one stealing while the young ones are are innocent or the young ones steal while the old ones don't. And then in the future when KARMA start biting back they start complaining not remembering that them too stole as well.
The amount of pain I feel in my heart when I hear people defending their stealing with that God forsaken excuse ''Na where pesin dey work naim him dey chop naim make them call am workchop" is unimaginable bro.
Sometimes when I think of this country,I get scared of the future that is awaiting the unborn ones.
Please continue to speak out like you did here, someone somewhere will come across you message and change to become a better person and
God bless you for taking time out to air your view concerning this.
May Nigeria succeed.

BE THE CHANGE YOU WANNA SEE!

18wheeler:

Your submission just took my mind back to last year. Started a poultry business after lockdown wahala with about 1000 birds, 700 layers & 300 broilers. Also tried some Turkeys for the first time, 15 of them. Wife was supposed to run the farm but she was pregnant so we employed someone to watch the farm under her supervision. Farm had room with bath and toilet for the worker and a brooding room which he used as extra accommodation as I wasn't into brooding. When birds began laying, this guy negotiated supply deal with a woman who sold noodles&chips across the road. He would wake in the night and pick eggs laid after wife left in the evening then supply to the woman's shop. We were practically sharing proceeds like 70:30 and the maniac was still collecting salary of 25k per month. Feed was just finishing and eggs proceeds were not measuring up until a neighbor caught and reported him. I involved the police and both were arrested but the buyer opted for personal settlement and she refunded what we could establish. I lost alot and had to scale down the business until wife is strong enough to run it on her own. Presently do only layers of 200max. I cant sink funds to share with any thief again. People have been coming to ask for the job but I always tell them no money even though the truth is I cant trust anyone again. I've been stung once and it's enough.
Hmmmm, this is deep.
It is such a pity how some Nigerians are like this.
Thank God we still have some honest citizens among us,
But they are hard to come by.
Millions of people are out there also with your type of experience sir.
God save Nigeria and Nigerians!!!

He did something noble.

I wish I could see some of the people who bashed him for returning the money, I'll only ask them this question, if the money were yours, will you prefer the person who found it to return it or retain it.

The hypocrisy of individuals stinks to high heavens.

My friend I did the same thing 2005 by returning the money was mistakenly giving to me by my customer. The Money was #130.000 even the woman didn't appreciate what I did 4 her. In 2014 I lost #248.000 nobody return anything back to me so it seems that doing good today doesn't attract reward from any supernatural being.
