Court Restrains Bash Ali, Bars Him From Defaming Sports Minister

The Honourable Justice O.C. Agbaza of the High Court of the Federal  Capital Territory (FCT) Wednesday issued a restraining order, barring Bash Ali from further making or publishing any denigrating or defamatory material against the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare.

It will be recalled that sometime in April, 2021, Bash Ali had in a letter, which he made available to the public, made several allegations against the Honourable Minister. The Honourable Minister denied those allegations and to assert his innocence, the Honourable Minister filed Suit No. FCT/HC/CV/1269/2021 seeking injunctive reliefs and pecuniary damages from Bash Ali on account of the defamatory publication. Despite the pendency of this suit, Bash Ali recently published a video on social media in which he repeated those false allegations against the Honourable Minister and also issued several threats against the Honourable Minister and the Ministry.

In response, the Honourable Minister through his counsel, Festus Keyamo Chambers, filed an Interlocutory application with Motion No. M/7145/2021 seeking an order restraining Bash Ali from further denigrating the Honourable Minister until the pending suit is resolved one way or the other. The Honourable Court presided over by Honourable Justice  O.C. Agbaza granted the reliefs sought by the Honourable Minister in the morning of 27th October, 2021.

While confirming this position, counsel to the Honourable Minister, Festus Ukpe, Esq of Festus Keyamo Chambers further stated that by virtue of this order, any further denigrating or defamatory publication by Bash Ali against the Honourable Minister is contemptuous of the majesty of the court and is punishable as a crime under our laws. The matter is now adjourned till 15th November, 2021 for further hearing.

Make Bash Alli go rest, the government is not ready to sponsor a Guinness world record bout that will retire him permanently, not only from the ring but for life.

He's done this with almost every sports minister since the early 2000s.


He wants the Federal Government to sponsor his Guinness World Record fight, but the government has other more important issues to take care of, besides, it is not certain that Bash Alli will survive such a fight. Therefore, he has taken to accusing sports ministers of receiving money from government for the fight and stealing the money. He often goes to the Sports Ministry to cause a lot of trouble and this usually ends with security men having to throw him out of the complex. He has once again threatened to invade the premises of the Sports Ministry.

He's still trying to break the record for the oldest world champion. He tried to get funding from President Obasanjo to stage the fight in Nigeria. Obasanjo bought the idea at first, but pulled out after Bash Ali performed badly in a warm up fight (he didn't want to sponsor a suicide attempt).

Presidents Yar'Adua and Jonathan ignored him, so he turned to Ghaddafi for funding. He was in Libya when the crisis started and was one of the Nigerians that were evacuated by the Federal Government.

Bash Ali was one of my favourite boxers of the late 1980s and early 1990s. I will never forget Bash Ali vs Joe Lasisi in the late '80s (Ali and Lasisi were the best Nigerian boxers at that time).

Bash Ali rearranged Lasisi's face and Joe Lasisi protested that Bash Ali should have been disqualified because he (Lasisi) saw two Bash Ali in the ring. He claimed that Bash Ali used juju. Bash Ali replied that he defeated Joe Lasisi with his Bendel Insurance and that became Ali's catch phrase. (When a man is punch drunk, it's quite likely that he will see double.


In the early 2000s Bash Ali decided that he wanted to set the record of being the oldest man to win a world title. He initially got the support of President Obasanjo, but Obasanjo later pulled out after Bash Ali performed poorly in a warm up fight. Ali was beaten black and blue by another African boxer and Obasanjo decided that he did not want to sponsor a suicide attempt.

Since then, Bash Ali has been pestering every government to sponsor his world title attempt. He has frequently gotten into tussles with security aides of government officials. In 2013 the bodyguards of the then sports minister, Bolaji Abdullahi also roughened him up.

In fact, the problem actually started when Obasanjo was president.

Obasanjo had agreed to back his title fight. Then Bash Ali fought a warm up fight in Lagos. He was beaten black and blue by an unknown boxer. That's why Obasanjo pulled out. He didn't want to sponsor a suicide attempt.

Bash Ali has been harrassing government officials since then. He wants to force them to sponsor the fight.

This is the third or fourth time that he has been involved in altercations with government officials.

In fact, he got fed up of Nigerian officials and went to Libya to get Muammar Ghaddafi to sponsor his title fight. He was trapped in Libya when the uprising began and he had to be rescued by the Federal Government.

Your story about Lasisi seeing ‘double’ is wrong. Prove me wrong.
I don’t think both men ever met.’

Lasisi dominated the African light heavyweight scene as at then.
I remember reading that it was actually a Ghanaian boxer who accused Lasisi of using juju when they fought. Not sure why Joe Allotey keep coming into my mind as the boxer that made that accusation.

Lasisi went on to fight Virgil Hill in a world title fight and Hill battered him.

Relax. Don't be too forward. Ali claimed the minister wants a share from the bout. Let's all stand against corruption. This is an injustice. Bash Ali has tried fr this country. He did his best. The country should give him this opportunity.

There's nothing honourable about the politicians of 9ja. Which we all now but it has already turn to their elected right. There's no honour amongst thieves and brainless people who are concerned about themselves only.
