South Africa conducted local municipal elections on Monday, 01 November 2021 to choose new mayors and councillors across the country. The final results were announced on Thursday.

For the first time since the end of apartheid almost 30 years ago, more South Africans (53%) have voted for opposition parties. The ruling African National Congress (ANC) - the party of Nelson Mandela and which has been in power since 1994, has been forced to look for coalition parties to help them govern major cities, which seems unlikely in most places.

Most big opposition parties have already announced they will not join the ANC in coalitions due to a history of poor service delivery and corruption scandals.
