MTN Communications Plc, Airtel and Mafab Communications all met the NCC's fixed reserve price for the 3.5GHz spectrum auction at $197.4 million (75 billion) naira.

The first round of the auction of the 3.5Ghz spectrum ended with the three bidders, MTN Communications Plc, Airtel and MAFAB Communications, taking the current price of the spectrum from the reserved $197.4m to $199.374m.

Nigeria's 3.5 GHz Auction that opened at $199.4 million this morning now priced at $215.8 million in an ongoing fifth round. Trio of MTN Nigeria, Airtel and Mafab still in the race.

The 5G license auction ongoing in Abuja, may go to the wire as NCC padded up to $6million to bring the current price to $215,782,901.38. All the bidders have accepted the price.

The bid started this morning around 11am with the MTN team led by its Chief Executive officer, Karl Toriola; Mafab Communications led by its chairman, Alhaji Musibau Bashir, and Airtel led by Chief Financial officer, Mr S. Krishna Menon.

The auction is still ongoing.

The qualified bidders that have met the criteria for participation in the licensing process of 3.5Ghz spectrum, including payment of the stipulated Intention to Bid Deposit (IBD) as outlined in the Information Memorandum (IM), are MTN Nigeria Plc., Mafab Communications Limited and Airtel Networks Limited.

I am not into telecoms but I just wonder where and how these telcos are going to recoup the money spent on these licenses.

5G is really just a value added service and not revolutionary (yet) as claimed or sold The telcos will still have the same subscribers and the same growth rate, maybe a little higher but nothing to justify the high fees.

5G will be a decent revenue earner for them if it can provide constant high speed internet which can replace home broadband. If the anecdotal evidence from my friends and I in the western capital city I am based in is anything to go by, then I cant see that happening anytime soon.

So can anyone in the know educate me? Please dont tell me of all the nice things 5G will do in the future, tell me what it can do in the medium term (next 5yrs)

The 5G license bid price has risen to $231,146,643.96 million in round 7.

The three bidders, MTN, Airtel and MAFAB are still hanging on and none ready to step down.

The commission, has however reduced the bid time to 10 minutes per round.

Current price now $240.39m per slot in the 8th round of bidding. All three bidders actively participating.

Current price per slot at $251.2 million in ninth round, with all three bidders still in the race.

5G license to surpass GSM, as round 11 climbs to $275.904 million
