The question is "are you saying Nigerian husbands don't help their wives during postpartum that omugwuo would be required?
The statement was...
Surely Nigeria husbands aren't shigidi that can't lift a finger to care their own wife and kid in similar situations naw!
Your Omugwos take away from the experience is that meant solely for husband and wife in their marriage, this by introducing a third-party to lessen the burden of the experience. undecided

How can I write what I don't know or haven't experienced? PPD can even make a new mum to commit suicide, the nipples pain, inability to sleep at night and that of CS distabilize most mothers. Women need companions and love during the period.
so it her aggressiveness that would make her pain subside? How about she stabbed the mother to death, what would be your statement then. And who told you men don't care for their expectant wife's?

are you trying to be funny or what? grin

So you understand postpartum depression, you understand yeast infection, torn or painful vagina as an attendant consequence of child birth, you understand stretch marks, hormonal changes and obesity after child birth with its solutions better than a mother that birthed and groomed her child for years grin

1. This is a serious issue here. undecided

2. Yes! The solutions are given by her doctor, who is likely a male himself, and if male doctors can understand and give instructions to the woman's husband as to how to care for his wife during that period, what stops him from caring for his wife better than her mother can? undecided

"Welcome in your house?" When you get married, it s no longer your house even if you alone built the house or if you built it even before you met her. That is the law, not just in developed countries, but also in Nigeria. I followed a case in Nigeria a couple of years back, somewhere in Western Nigeria where it was so established by the courts. When you marry, it becomes "our" house, not your house. And yes, if my mother is a cantankerous, quarrelsome woman who does not recognise that she is a visitor in our house, she will not be welcome. You have not asked the OP what he and his mother did to a woman who newly gave birth that drove her to desperation and pulling a knife in her own house. Not every elderly person is a nice person. In fact, it seems in our parents generation, there are a large number of them who enjoy being wicked. You don't respect someone because they are old/elderly. You respect someone who is old because they respect themselves. That's what the Good Book says : Grey headedness is a beauty when FOUND IN THE WAY OF RIGHTEOUSNESS. Not unrighteousness.

You realize that what you continue to do is fish for silly excuses, right? undecided

Everyday across the world there are men helping nurse their wife and baby to health after delivery. Majority have not had to quit their jobs to accomplish this. So I don't see why you would think a husband has to leave his work to do so even in your Nigeria. undecided

In Asian countries for instance, many men bath their wife and baby every morning, prepare meals and make sure all is prepared for the day, this before they leave for work. There after work routine is similar, and they continue this routine until their spouse becomes strong enough to help. undecided

Why can't a Nigerian father do the same for his wife and baby and in his marriage? undecided

It will be good to understand why you condemned her. Do you know what that Mummy's boy and his mum had been doing and saying to her? We forget that harsh, nasty words and trying to control an individual's life by insisting on your own suggestions and ways of doing things can be worse than stabbing the person severally. I can only imagine her anguish at being told by the mother in-law how she must do things in her own house and being chastised severally and have a husband who will support his mother against his own wife. She must have gotten to the point of desperation where she determined that it is only crazy action like pulling a knife that mummy and her son will understand. I'm against violence. But don't continually mete out verbal violence and expect docility. I have not seen where she was diagnosed with a mental health challenge. So it seems she finally got desperate sine there was no succor coming from her husband.

Send her packing? You guys are fortunate the Nigeria police does not do it's duty. Else it is you the guy who will be sent packing from the house. If she is smart and intelligent, even now, you will have to leave the house for her. She is not your subordinate. She is your partner.

Most of you lack sense.

You are a Nigerian and you are not a whiteman. Nigerian cultures are older than you. One of my brothers married into a very rich family. When I say rich, I mean one of the family's that currently have the Governor of one of Nigeria's states. Yet the woman went for Omugwo talkless of your mom an ordinary underpaid Nigerian lecturer that I can comfortably put on payroll.

You foolish boys with no identity love mocking your culture in the name of your foolish civilisation that you arent even among the top.

Are you or your family richer than Obi Cubana, Arthur Eze, etc that respect their cultures? Who is your family in Nigeria? Who know your family name?

How does Omugwo equate to poverty?

When my wife gave birth, nobody came for Omugwo cos her mom is late and my mom wasn't feeling so well then. Even though we had domestic workers, we still missed the fact that no grandma came for Omugwo.

So carry your useless poverty striken city wannabe mentality and gerraat angry

I so much hate people that despise their identity
I only stated an opinion, fool, and do t insult my mum, saying she's underpaid. What do your parents do for a living. Inferiority complex don dey do you. Okpetu

1. Nigerian society is ruled by the opinions of the foolish majority so anyone who submits to such is already beyond saving. undecided

2. Is it a woman's place to expect these things of her husband ? Or is a man supposed to know from the start that he is meant as a 'helper' to his wife in his own marriage? undecided

I know many a Nigerian are allergic to common sense but many of these things are programmed in lower animals that is shouldn't be that far from us in terms of sense. undecided

I am always objective and who ever is is wrong will on the matter will get it. I hope when it comes to her own siblings they are all pretty and perfect innit? Only his mum is the ogre that’s needs to to sent to the abyss??

Make una they judge matter with sense ooo. That woman won’t treat her own mother like that even if she was so bad.

My house or our house the man is the head especially if he provides. The woman only collects without giving anything bt headache and won’t even hesitate to throw u under the bus if she ever had the power.

All ur family cannot be evil and wicked and hers are all saints. Smtn is wrong smwhere. It is normal logic.

Have you considered the fact that your wife might be going or might've gone through postpartum depression, which might've led to that behaviour?

Were she and your mum having problems before your wife got pregnant and had a baby?

N.B. Postpartum depression is not an excuse for bad behaviour, it is real.
and the postpartum depression left as soon as her mum came abi ?

Anger must have led to that. If he handle their misunderstanding maturedly, it wouldn't have resulted to all these. He was one sided in handling the issue.

Wat stupid anger would lead a lady to pick up a knife and threaten her mother in law? Stop blaming the man when the woman is a devil. The bible says it's better for a man to live on top of a roof than to stay with a quarrelsome/hot tempered wife

Exactly, maybe her patience has been seriously tested. We dont know the full story and the guy also garnished the topic to paint the wife bad. Really mamas boy. He should go and settle his family before running to social media. To be a man is not only to impregnate a woman

Like say we be low grade family, na so my mum go mumu leave her lecturing work wey she even dey look for more time to conclude research, dey urge to go abroad for omugwo, as if she's the first mother in law in d world, or na she be the first grandmum on earth, I hate to hear this useless term,,, omugwo. First you lack parental upbringing for you to have called your mum *mumu* am very sure you must have slapped her before. Mother in-laws that comes for Omugo are not stupid and it is not joblessness that make them to visit It create bound amongst the families.
