It took a thousand year for the Russian empire to be formed only for traitors to give a sizeable chunk of it away, and he wants to go down in history as the man that reclaimed Russia's lost glory. This is something he had been planning probably for decades, but he had to wait until the Russian armed forces was modernized with very powerful weapons.

Some days ago Putin recognised two regions in Ukraine as independent states, those regions are Donbass and Luhansk.
Those 2 regions are a majority Russian population. Those are regions where the Russian military has entered
