You can thank modern technology for giving fans here in the U.S. the ability to catch Beyoncé kill it at Glastonbury on Sunday, as a video feed displayed part of her set at the BET Awards. As the first female headliner in the festival’s history, B more than delivered with her 90-minute set, covering Alanis Morissette, Prince and Kings of Leon, digging up old Destiny’s Child tracks and previewing new songs off 4. She talked about her historic performance with the BBC after the show, while sporting wellies—a festival staple given the notoriously muddy conditions—and managing to make the bulky footwear look fashionable all the same. (The network even made “Crazy In Mud” souvenir buttons.) B revealed that she worked on preparations for two months leading up to the festival and sought advice and suggestions from Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and husband Jay-Z. “I don’t know if I would have been asked to come if he didn’t do the performance,” she said of Jay’s headlining show at Glastonbury in 2008. She’s being modest. How could one of the world’s largest music festivals overlook one of the world’s biggest stars?

If interview etiquette isn’t at play here, a comment like this also calls to mind the overwhelming amount of time the typically private B spends professing her love on her new album. With the exception of “Best I Never Had” and “Run The World (Girls),” 4 is loaded with songs about commitment and dedication (to the point of references about being “up in the kitchen” for her man). She was by no means a man-hater over her last discs, but definitely a promoter of self-love above anything else. Do her songs resonate less (or seem more boring) now that you know she’s in a stable and positive relationship? Has she lost her fierceness? Maybe it’s just a sign of growing up and evolving, but still, we feel fairly certain that Sasha Fierce would never not take credit for the undeniable awesomeness we witnessed last night. video below:
