Do you know that some Americans are now driving into Mexico to fill their cars? Unfortunately for them, Mexico has discovered the loophole and they have stopped fuel subsidy in those border areas.

Guy. Last last, when all the false stories you have been posting on nairaland is exposed, you will deactivate your account and move to the next trending topic. I know your kind. That's why there is no need to attempt to counter your falsehood. It will fall flat on their face.

And the best part is, people will hardly trust anything coming from western media.

What's your take-away from that?

Here is the deal; there is no remarkable gas shortage in the US at the moment (at least, not yet) but prices have gone up due to global effects. Just like in Nigeria, petroleum products are heavily subsidized in Mexico. Therefore, Americans that live near the border drive to Mexican filling stations for better deals (the currency difference also gives them some advantage). This, coupled with the fact that the subsidy is becoming more expensive in terms of opportunity cost, has prompted the Mexican government to consider suspending the subsidy.

So the few people who cross the border to cut deals are only trying to take advantage of the gasoline subsidy and not that there's shortage of gas in the US (fun fact, we sometimes go from Canada to the US to get certain American products at cheaper rates too). This didn't just start now though. It only became more noticeable. It is no secret that the price of oil is going up everywhere and people are doing different things to cut cost, but let's not make the mistake of thinking the Russian issue is already causing gas shortage in the US/Canada. These countries never depended on Russian gas. Mexico is the 11th largest producer of oil while the US is the 1st. That accounts for something.

Mexico Halts Gas Relief as U.S. Citizens Head South to Stock Up

Finance Ministry says border crossers have diminished supply
Suspension on gasoline stimulus to last through April 8

Mexico suspended gasoline subsidies for states along its northern border as the Finance Ministry said U.S. citizens crossing into the country are draining supply.

Gasoline prices in the U.S. are higher than Mexico, which has led U.S. citizens to head south and stock up on fuel, according to a statement from Mexico’s Finance Ministry. That’s led to reports of shortages, according to the ministry.

Global oil prices have surged since Russia invaded Ukraine. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez has pledged to cut exports and increase oil refining in a bid to make the country energy self-sufficient, but the rise in prices has led AMLO, as the president is known, to adjust that message.

AMLO has said state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos could keep exporting crude to take advantage of high prices and use that cash to provide relief to consumers. In a preliminary budget draft delivered to lawmakers Friday, the Finance Ministry saw crude exports at 879,000 barrels a day this year and 764,000 barrels in 2023.
