ALICE IN WONDERLAND SYNDROME

Alice in Wonderland may be pure fantasy, but one of Alice’s more bizarre experiences shares its characteristics with a scary mental disorder. Known also as Todd Syndrome, Alice in Wonderland Syndrome causes one’s surroundings to appear distorted. Just as Alice grows too tall for the house, those suffering from Alice in Wonderland Syndrome will hear sounds either quieter or louder than they actually are, see objects larger or smaller than reality, and even lose sense of accurate velocity or textures. This terrifying disorder, which has been described as an LSD trip without the euphoria, even perverts one’s own body image. Fortunately, Alice in Wonderland Syndrome is extremely rare, and in most cases affects those in their 20s who have a brain tumor or history of drug use.

ALIENHAND SYNDROME

Though it’s often been used in terrifying plot twists, Alien Hand Syndrome is hardly limited to the fictional world. Those with this scary, but fortunately rare, mental disorder experience a complete loss of control of a hand or limb. The uncontrollable limb often seems to take on a mind and will of its own, and sufferers have reported their “alien” limb attempting to choke either themselves or others, ripping clothing, or scratching to the point of blood. Alien Hand Syndrome most often appears in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease or Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, or as a result of brain surgery during which the brain’s two hemispheres have been separated. Unfortunately, no cure exists for Alien Hand Syndrome, and those affected by it are often left to keep their hands constantly occupied or use their other hand to control the alien hand.

Apotemnophilia

Known also as Body Integrity Disorder and Amputee Identity Disorder, Apotemnophilia is a neurological disorder characterized by the overwhelming desire to amputate or damage healthy parts of the body. Though not much is known about this strangely terrifying disorder, is is believed to be associated with damage to the right parietal lobe of the brain. Because the vast majority of surgeons will not amputate healthy limbs upon request, some sufferers of Apotemnophilia feel forced to amputate on their own — a dangerous scenario. Of those who have had a limb removed by a doctor, most are reportedly happy with their decision even after the fact.

Is a debilitating (not good) mental disorder in which one believes that the people around them have been replaced with imposters out to get them yeah real story ,

A sufferer a 74 year old woman called the cops , 'confused cops' was convinced that her husband had been replaced by an imposter and is out to get her

Well the good thing is that it's rare , and is usually caused by trauma affecting the brain , although common amongst people diagnosed with schizophenia dementia and Epilepsy yes Epilepsy

BOANTHROPY

Those who suffer from the very very rare but scary mental disorder Boanthropy believe they are cows
Often going as far as behaving as such
Most sufferers are often seen on all fours with cows , yes eating grass too as if they were a true member of the herd

Sufferers don't seem to know what they are doing doing this period
Leaving researchers to believe it may have been induced from dreams or even hypnosis

Well as interesting as it sounds to some it is believed king Nebuchadnezzar of the Bible suffered from boathrophy with quote
'driven from men and did eat grass as an oxen

COTARD DELUSION

There's a healthy interest in the walking dead and other Zombie trend and then theres Cotard Delusion
This Bad boy mental disorder causes sufferers to believe they are the walking dead (Literally), or a ghost and their body is decaying and or they have lost all blood or internal Organs

The feeling of having a rotten body is actually part of the delusion

In some cases most sufferers starve themselves to death

This terrifying Disorder was first described by neurologist Jules Cotard though fortunately cotards disorder has been proven rare

The most well known case occurred in Haiti , where a man abosoulutly convinced that he had died of Aids gone to hell (religious influence right)

Well as scary and folkloric as it sounds it does happen

Diogenes Syndrome

Is more commonly referred to as 'hoarding'
And is one of the most misunderstood mental Disorders , named after a Greek Philosopher Diogenes of Sinope (who was ironically a minimalist)

Sufferers have this compelling desire the collect random objects or items to which emotional attachment is now formed .

In addition to this uncontrollably hoarding , sufferers show extreme self neglect , apathy towards themselves and others , social withdrawal and no shame of their habit

Common among the elderly , people with dementia and people who at a point in their life have been abandoned (Jeffery Dahmar comes to mind) , or who lacked stable home enviroment growing up

Dissociative identity disorder (DID)

Also commonly known as multiple personality diaorder , is a terrifying mental illness that is included in myriad movies and television shows

Although very generally misunderstood . Sufferers usually have 2 or 3 (usually more ) different identities

Sufferers routinely switch between identities and can remain that way for hours even years

They can switch identities anytime and without warning and it is almost impossible to convince people with DID that they have it . For this reason those with DID are usually in mental institutions

PARIS SYNDROME

A mental disorder that is more amusing than it is freaky, Paris syndrome is defined as a sense of heavy disappointment by some individuals who – upon visiting Paris – experience extreme reality shock due to the city not living up to their expectations.

This highly novel condition comes with very real symptoms such as hallucinations, anxiety, dizziness, sweating, and vomiting, and can all be attributed to facing up to the large disconnect between what a sufferer had imagined Paris to be versus what the city really is.

The condition has been reported mostly amongst Japanese tourists who are obsessed with the prospect of visiting Paris and experiencing the beautiful culture and sights, but – upon their arrival – are overwhelmed by the language barrier, difference in formalities, and jet lag.

Add to that the shattering of the image of Paris portrayed in Japanese media (scuffed up sneakers instead of designer shoes everywhere, or fast food joints instead of alfresco-style cafes along the street, etc), and you have an intensely-stressed-out traveller with a lot of disappointment to deal with

Stendhal syndrome

Now here’s a peculiar one. Sufferers of Stendhal syndrome experience symptoms such as anxiety, panic attacks, and hallucinations when exposed to art. Or more precisely, extremely beautiful art.

Of course, all art is subjective, but Stendhal syndrome has been documented most in people visiting places with plenty of art and architecture, such as museums and galleries. The condition was named after French author Marie-Henri Beyle (who went by the pen name Stendhal) after he documented his feelings of being elated but also extremely anxious after visiting the Basilica of Santa Croce in Italy in 1817.

Despite various cases of Stendhal syndrome being reported over the decades since, psychologists are still yet to determine whether or not Stendhal syndrome classifies as a legitimate mental condition.

Klüver–Bucy syndrome.

At some point, you may have felt the urge to put something random in your mouth – like a pen or a paper clip. But that urge pales in comparison to the ones felt by those suffering from Klüver–Bucy syndrome.

Described as an extremely rare cerebral neurological disorder stemming from damage to both the patient's temporal lobes, Klüver–Bucy syndrome causes sufferers to have unusually strong urges to place objects in their mouths, and also have the tendency to engage in inappropriate sexual behavior.

While it may sound pretty funny, it probably isn't as much fun for those suffering from the disorder.

Other symptoms include placidity (the state of being extremely calm), loss of memory, changes in appetite, as well as hypermetamorophosis (the urge or need explore everything).

Due to the disorder stemming from damage to the key areas of the brain, Klüver–Bucy syndrome is pretty uncommon, and is usually treated with the use of psychotropics.

KORO SYNDROME (Typical in Nigeria)

Koro syndrome takes genital-related anxiety and cranks it all the way to eleven.

It's described as a psychiatric disorder where individuals experience extreme irrational paranoia that their joysticks (for males) or vulva/nipples (for females) are shrinking into their bodies, and will eventually cause their deaths.

The syndrome has been more commonly exhibited by males, and is more common in Africa and southeast asia than anywhere else in the world. It has also been classed as being an Obsessive Compulsive disorder.

Those suffering from Koro syndrome have claimed that their obsessions with their "shrinking Instruments" can range from being quite mild all the way to extreme, with some patients being compelled to measure their privates multiple times a day.

Experts have attempted to treat Koro syndrome with medication such as antidepressants as well as behavioral therapy, with varying degrees of success

While most people can count themselves lucky to be free of such extreme afflictions, it doesn't diminish the fact that some of these mental illnesses cause patients to experience truly horrific realities even when everything is really just fine.

For anyone that can relate to the disorders listed above (or even if you just don't feel that all is fine mentally), then it's probably best that you seek professional help.

Understand that there's absolutely no shame in receiving psychiatric treatment, and that reaching out can greatly improve the quality of life for those with the most prevalent mental conditions – such as ADHD, eating disorders, and depression.and.......remember to smile

The brain (and extensively the human body) is an ultra delicate organ.
And the fact that it's the powerhouse of functioning makes a little imbalance cause immense and varying differences.

The unfortunate thing is, it's super complex too,
So complex that despite so much ground breaking discoveries, scientists still haven't cracked Specific &/ Ultimate solutions to its problems... In 2022.

There's still a whole lot of guess works around it.

Now, Imagine a person being aware of his condition(s) & its limitations.

...and how these limitations weaken the effectiveness of his efforts or even nullifies it... regardless of the intensity he throws in.

Life is uncertain already, but there's an additional fresh uncertainty to deal with now cos...(virtually all mental disorders are chronic).
There are no specific & ultimate solutions yet, just a bunch of testings that if unlucky could complicate things further.

It's no wonder virtually everyone in this trap are suicidal or battle suicidal thoughts — those that are aware & those that aren't.

Unfortunately it's too hard for unaffected people to understand &/ create necessary accommodations to make things easier — The stigma, The disregard, The misconceptions makes things extra harder for people trying to figure out a fate they didn't create

The ultimately funny thing however is: Anyone can be a victim
...at any point in their lives

Let me tell you something you guys claiming "atheists" always fail to see, with thesourcerer, you claim to be open minded, free minded and you claim "religion" is the source of hate and wars and intolerance but you are always taking a jab at other people for choosing to believe what they believe.
Always mocking and outrightly insulting people on the internet doesn't make you smarter or more learned. Believing in God is a choice and a fulfilling one for many people.
The biggest arguments you guys use is that the west and Asia are advanced even without religion, stop being ignorant and ask and research when you know not. The west have always been the most religious and God conscious people for as old as their history goes, until this very millenia. America, The UK, France hell all Western civilization is built on Christian beliefs and values, go figure.
Asian countries still practice their faith, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Thailand even China. Religion and believing in God is not the cause of "backwardness", intolerance, humanities need to dominate is. Men have gone to wars in the name of love, doesn't mean love is the cause of wars. You celebrate Greek mythology but you piss on your local African traditions to sound and look exposed. You are not better than me because you don't believe in God and I do. Tell thesourcerer. I'm not speaking as an affected person, just speaking on general grounds on how society's perception increases the burden

If faith helps some people feel/live better with it, it's actually fine

But as you've pointed, virtually (if not...) all deliverance/miracle claims have no strong evidence or replication to prove their potency

Science has been the closest & biggest evidence and even with that, there are still several miles to cover

PS : 'Victim' looks like a weak word for people who endure so much, I prolly typed fast & forgot to edit — fixed it

Non-Verbal Learning Disability (NVLD)

Ever met a person who talks too much & so well, yet, has challenges with achieving their goals or having their lives in order despite the fact that they aren't lazy?

Chances are, they may be struggling with Non Verbal Learning Disability - NVLD (the most overlooked, misunderstood & underdiagnosed learning disability according to additudemag.com)

Contrary to its name, people with Non Verbal Learning Disability actually appear to be very fluent and/or vocal from a tender age & throughout their lives, unfortunately that's what covers up their challenges & inefficiencies in virtually every other area

Asides from being vocal, they barely have strength in other areas & may have to struggle :

- To read social cues (or not even be aware enough to read them)

- To coordinate both their internal body balance & the space/activities around their environments

- To read clocks, maps, graphs, mathematics & various other technical stuff

Some of the characteristics a person with NVLD may posses include :

- Talking too much (which could annoy people)

- Clumsiness (gross & fine motor skills challenges)

- Eloquence/Verbal Smartness (they're verbally intelligent but have a knowledge application challenge)

- An inclination to be phonetically accurate & have fine pronunciations

- An ability to form/conjure new words that sound logical & interesting

- A preference for engaging older people more than their peers

- Being 'homebodies' (they prefer being indoor than exploring the world around them)

-Inquisitiveness (These last three characteristics are aided even more now with the Internet)

- Acting a bit immature and naive for their age & 'wisdom'

- High chances of difficulties with driving

NB : The intensity of some of these characteristics may become less obvious in adulthood

NVLD is most often considered, likewise mistaken as one of the symptoms of Aspergers Syndrome (...which has now been classified under Autism Spectrum Disorder) or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder due to several similarities.

However NVLD is best handled when identified as a distinct condition...(which could be a comorbidity in cases where there are clear signs of ASD or ADHD) rather than a symptom.

Unlike other disorders that have been listed, people with NVLD act quite normal, in fact they are usually considered to be very bright as a result of their eloquence

Thanks to this eloquence & their rote learning strengths, most of them manage to move through early school years fairly well

Yet there's only so much these strengths can help with when they get to levels where they need to solve complex problems & apply their knowledge in new or specific situations

It's usually at such points most people with NVLD (just as in the case of ADHD) increasingly get aware & sense something could be off about them,

However, they barely get to figure out (a neuro-developmental disorder has plagued them all their lives) until they hit a dead-end, or can't seem to make the kind of progress that corresponds with their level of 'intelligence' no matter how hard they try

When discovered early, NVLD can be managed with the required assistance & accommodations, however, like other developmental disorders, it's a chronic condition.

PS : While NVLD is largely overlooked & underdiagnosed, this piece doesn't serve as a diagnostic tool, but rather for information purposes, it doesn't take responsibility for personal conclusions. It's important you make your extensive research & if promising, contact your health care provider

https://www.additudemag.com/maybe-its-not-add-after-all/

Chris Rock is the only famous person that has identified he has NVLD, despite that, the awareness is still really low
