Lightweight boxer Simiso Buthelezi, 24, who suffered bleeding on the brain following a fight at the weekend in Durban, has died.

Boxing South Africa (BSA) announced his death on Wednesday, June 8.

A 10-round World Boxing Federation All-Africa bout against fellow South African Siphesihle Mntungwa on Sunday, June 5, was halted by the referee when Buthelezi began throwing punches in the air during the final round.

He was rushed to hospital and placed in an induced coma after it was discovered he had bleeding on the brain, but died on Tuesday, June 7.

Trainer Bheki Mngomezulu said Buthelezi was perfectly healthy during the build-up to the bout.

BSA added that there will be an independent medical review of the tragedy.

Buthelezi was perfectly healthy during the build-up
No, he wasn’t. That grueling weight cut is enough to kill anyone long before punches to the head commence. I commend the referee’s expertise by stopping the match when he saw the man was psychologically unable to continue.
