Pastor clubs landlord’s son to death

Confusion continues to trail the death of one Adegbenro Adeshida, which sad event occurred on Wednesday, 13 July, 2011. Until his death, 34-year-old Adeshida, a divorcee, eked out a living as a vulcanizer in the metropolis. Adeshida, was the second son of this late father, Dawodu, who himself passed on early last year.

Upon this, Adeshida was bequeathed with a bungalow from his father’s inheritance. The bungalow is situated at No. 5, Wanike Street, Oshinle, Akure, the Ondo State capital. Since he took over ownership of the house, Adeshida had not been able to draw tenancy rates from the occupiers of the building. This became unbearable for him. His attempt to collect rent from the tenants in his father’s house has now landed him in the mortuary, but there appears not to be a clear position as to how the man actually died and who killed him.

While an account says one of the tenants, a pastor engaged Adeshida in a fight which made him (the pastor) to smash a wood on Adeshida’s head, another account says all the tenants in the house jointly descended on their new landlord and beat him to death. The first account has it that, on that fateful day, Adeshida left his house early and headed for his father’s building passed unto him. That morning, Adeshida reportedly met with one of the tenants, the presiding pastor at The Christ Foundation Ministry, Olafioye Street, opposite Isako Guest House, in Akure. He allegedly demanded for his rent, but the pastor was said to have urged the deceased to come back later in the day for the money.

By the time Adeshida came back later that afternoon, Baba Chika (as the pastor is known) was no longer at home. But the landlord met the wife to the pastor, who reportedly told Adeshida that her husband was away and did not give a definite time when he would return home. This apparently enraged the young man, and he reportedly started raining abusive words on the woman. But the woman would not stand idly by and watched a man abuse her and her husband. She immediately responded, by calling Adeshida all sorts of names. This verbal warfare eventually led to fisticuffs between the two of them. An eyewitness says that while the fight raged between Adeshida and the wife of the pastor, a co-tenant in the building quickly rushed to call the pastor, apparently to rescue his wife from the hands of Adeshida, having allegedly thoroughly beaten the woman.

Within minutes, the pastor appeared and met Adeshida beating his wife. Rather than separate them, the pastor reportedly pounced on Adeshida and gave him a real fight. According to our source, it was at that time that the pastor picked a wood nearby and allegedly smashed it on the young man’s head. Adeshida allegedly slumped. Watchers of the scene immediately rushed to resuscitate the slumped man, but unknown to them, he was dead. Hoping that Adeshida would still make it, they took his body to the General Hospital in the town, but it was too late. He was confirmed dead at the hospital. While that lasted, the pastor and his wife disappeared into thin air and they have not been found until now.

Mr Wale Akinrinmisi claims to be around the scene of the incident. According to him, “It was the noise of the woman that attracted my attention from the shop where I was. While we were trying to separate the woman and the young man from fighting, we just saw the pastor came from nowhere. My friend even tried to explain to him what the matter was but he would not listen. The pastor just grabbed the young man’s buba and started fighting him. We tried to separate them but we could not. Suddenly, the pastor picked up a plank and wedged it on the head of the man and he slumped immediately.

Ondo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Adeniran Aremu, confirmed the story to reporters, but however, disagreed that it was the pastor that actually killed Adeshida. Aremu said that the tenants in the house at the time of the fight jointly beat the late man to death. Aremu said the tenants engaged Adeshida in a fight when he went there to collect the rent of one year they owed him. The police spokesman said immediately the man died, all the tenants involved in the fracas fled the house. One of the enants, Michael Ademilola, was arrested and detained for questioning by the police to unravel the real cause of the incident.
