No, it's not! Unfortunately many young people will not agree as reflected in the comments and responses to the original thread (see link below):

The sound knowledge of engineering is still being used to find solutions to some problems that face human beings.

However, the sound knowledge of engineering that's relevant is obtained by combining theoretical and practical approaches.

What does this mean?

From the first day yoi enroll in a university to study engineering,, focus on thoroughly assimilating core relevant courses. And also ensure your learning doesn't end in the classroom.

Join experienced individuals, factories, garages and any small scale engineering form to begin a period of apprenticeship.

In a nutshell, train yourself to be a combination of a sound theoretical engineer (as a student in the school) and a competent field engineer with an entrepreneurial spirit (as an apprentice).

For example, if you're studying for a degree in Civil, join experienced engineers (contractors) during weekends and vacations, to use your hands and brain. It's also a great opportunity to build network for the future.

It's in the field, that you will discover courses most relevant to achieving sluccess as a civil engineer.

An electrical engineering or a mechanical engineering student should also adopt the same method to acquire the sound knowledge that separates the hest from the rest.,

Individuals, corporate organizations and government are still outsourcing repairs and maintenance jobs to electrical/mexhanical engineers (contractors).

These contractors need labour that's cost friendly. They also have useful connections in private businesses and government.

if you serve them well, they may either choose to retain you after your apprenticeship, train and help you become a professional. Or they may give you a referral to a lucrative job in a blue chip company or in government. You may even choose to be your own employer.

Don't wait until it's time to do the compulsory one-session industrial apprenticeship of less than one year. Start from your year one to build a profile that future employers will find very attractive

Some comments in the earlier thtead suggested one shouldn't follow their passion, well I say, "follow your passion!" It's only when you do what you love that you discover the best of ypu, find happiness and fulfilment in life

While you are passionate and earning peanuts. Your mates in computer science are earning 10k USD a month for internship grin grin

Aside computer engineering and to some extent electrical engineering I won't advise my enemy to study anything engineering related. It's not lucrative again

Which professionals would build for us, houses to live in. Construct roads and bridges to travel on, build electric cars, build engines and other stuff which only engineers can build?

Governments are still awarding contracts for capital projects. Top on the list of those projects are contracts for building of roads and low cost houses. Someone has to build these things

Passion gives birth to creativity and creativity makes the way and puts one ahead of the game. You can add high net worth connections to creativity.

Passion is overrated and just because you are passionate about engineering doesn't mean that you will make a good engineer. Yes someone has to build things but governments across Africa aren't interested infrastructure projects. The developed world still spends more on infrastructure than the third world.
