Depends on the meal. But for most meal, it's usually one so that at the end of the day, you won't see the onions but u will perceive it presence by taste. To see onions in soup is irritating, but jollof rice or fried egg is different.

I start with 4 , but once my eyes starts burning ,I change to no 5,6,7,8,9,19 and run from the kitchen.

I add onions twice in my food. When starting I use number 1 and when the food I done I add number 8 (but that's not how mine is. The other rings would be inside) then I cover the pot and allow the heat to cook the onions and viola I serve.
