Funny country... they say diversify.... back to agriculture... step up production... what exactly is wrong with weed? Why throw these people in prison instead of opening avenues abroad for them to export and earn foreign currency for the country? The country that told you to make it illegal has made it legal.... because they can now make money from it. Why is it still illegal here?... when the plant is a natural here? The demonising of cannabis is one of the greatest irony and hypocrisy of the world. Imagine demonising a plant that grows naturally and allowing cigarette to be legal. They demonised cannabis because they couldn’t have market control and taxation over it since it’s a plant that grows naturally. But now some of the world societies are beginning to recant from such folly.

You have highlighted the paradox of cannabis prohibition. The number of deaths caused annually by alcohol, in terms of liver cirrhosis, overdose mortality, drunk driving, and violent behavior by drunks, numbers in the thousands worldwide. Despite this terrible record of death caused directly or indirectly by alcohol, that nasty poison is readily available and legal to buy over the counter in any quantity and by virtually anyone without restriction.

The death toll inflicted by legally available tobacco is even more alarming. because cigarettes kill people in the thousands annually by way of lung cancer, bronchitis, emphysema, and a host of other deadly ailments all directly caused by nicotine ingestion. Despite this horrifying death toll, cigarettes are legally available everywhere, allowing nicotine addicts to slowly poison themselves to death without any hindrance whatsoever. A single cigarette soaked in water for a few hours yields an EXTREMELY poisonous nicotine solution that can kill a human being if just a tiny amount is added to food or drink and thus accidentally ingested.

Cannabis, unlike highly addictive and toxic alcohol and cigarettes, has been scientifically proven to be enormously beneficial in the treatment of numerous medical conditions ranging from glaucoma eye ailments to pain relief, to cancer symptom alleviation, digestive tract problem resolution, curing insomnia, and other conditions too many to mention.

Yet, despite all the medical benefits of cannabis, it remains illegal and its users continue to be persecuted by overzealous law enforcement stormtroopers, simply because the pharmaceutical industry's powerful lobbyists who twist government policy to suit their greedy objectives, remain hellbent on monopolizing the market in medication supplies, even if that means depriving millions of people the opportunity to be cured cheaply using easily cultivated medical cannabis.

Growing weed OPENLY at home, of all places, in a country where so many people are broke, jobless, and hungry is a recipe for major legal problems. The police LOVE cannabis cases because they can steal and smoke the exhibit for their own pleasure, while at the same time extorting money from the arrested cannabis farmer REPEATEDLY until the farmer has sold every possession they own in life to fund the greedy cops' insatiable demand for bribe money.

As a drinker of no more than one can of beer a year if at all, I would have no complaints with new nationwide laws banning ALL alcohol as is the case in Islamic countries, especially since the medical applications of alcohol are very few and mostly dubious in efficacy.

The nicotine-laden cigarettes that you so stoutly defend most likely because you are a cigarette addict, directly result in millions of excruciatingly painful deaths worldwide from lung cancer, bronchitis, emphysema, and myriad other seriously life-threatening medical ailments that all manifest in the bodies of cigarette smoking nicotine addicts. As a rabid opponent of nicotine consumption via cigarettes, cigars, or any other vaporizing contraption, I would be delighted to see the introduction of cigarette smoking bans WORLDWIDE, in order to spare the non-smoking public from the risks of inhaling toxic, stinky, and carcinogenic secondhand tobacco smoke.

As a person whose thoughts and priorities are guided by common sense and pragmatism, I join Ondo State Governor Arakunrin Barrister Rotimi Akeredolu SAN, lawmaker Princess Onuoha the Amazon of Okigwe North constituency, and other well-meaning citizens of the world in urging the Nigerian government to END that wasteful and destructive colonial-era prohibition of cannabis, so that this cash crop can be exploited commercially as is done all over Africa today, from Lesotho to Malawi, to Ghana, Uganda, Zambia, and South Africa, among others harvesting dollars by the million with cannabis cultivation under government license.
