The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, which has been engaged in a protracted conflict with the Federal Government, has announced that the strike will continue indefinitely, despite the fact that university students have been at home for more than seven months. Who suffers when some demand for ASUU’s ouster and others claim they are fighting for a noble cause? Obviously, the students!

Some stakeholders have harped on the necessity for higher school fees, saying that the current fees are unsustainable, in order to put an end to this conflict between two elephants while the grass suffers. On the other hand, some contend that increasing tuition fees is not the answer because doing so would result in a large number of students quitting school because their low-income parents would find it difficult to pay the new tuition costs.

They contend that universities should find more innovative ways to raise money internally rather than raising tuition.

As Professor Tukur Sa’ad correctly noted, money is the “magic wand” that propels the university system, and Oclocknews‘s report on Nigeria’s tertiary education sector solicited the opinions of professionals and parents on how to address this issue.

The failure of the FG to sign the 2009 renegotiated FGN/ASUU Agreement, implement the Memorandum of Action (MoA) agreed to with the Union on December 23, 2020, replace the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) platform with the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), and pay arrears of minimum wage are among the complaints made by ASUU.

ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke declared that none of the problems identified in the December 2020 FGN-ASUU MoA that forced our Union to resume the suspended strike have been satisfactorily addressed by the Government to this point.
