ASUU Strike: FG Announces 23.5% Salary Increment For Lecturers by Sapa23: 5:18pm On Sep 06, 2022
By Akachukwu Ifeanyichukwu

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on Tuesday said the government could only afford 23.5 percent salary increase for lecturers, while a 35% increment will be enjoyed by professors.

The minister also noted that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) warned against signing agreements which the government will not be able to meet.

Adamu disclosed this while speaking during the meeting with vice-chancellors and other stakeholders in the university system.

He said,”The Federal Government can only afford a 23.5% salary increase for all category of the workforce in Federal Universities, except for the professorial cadre which will enjoy a 35% upward review.

“Henceforth, allowances that pertain to ad-hoc duties of the academic and non-academic staff shall be paid as at when due by the Governing Councils of Universities to which such services are rendered and to the staff who perform

them.

“That a sum of 150 billion Naira shall be provided for in the 2023 Budget as
funds for the revitalization of Federal Universities, to be disbursed to the
Institutions in the First Quarter of the year, and that a sum of 50 billion Naira shall be provided for in the 2023 Budget for the payment of outstanding areas of earned academic allowances, to be paid
in the First Quarter of the year”.

Speaking at the end of the meeting, the pro-chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, Professor Peter Okebukola, noted that the government was ready to go all out to ensure that the university lecturers return back to school.

ASUU is as useless as the government, they have been striking for close to a century now yet they still use thesame old method, can't they device another method that will have little consequences on the lives of the students? Their greed is similar to that of the politicians.

This is no news. This information was available the day Adamu mentioned that the only issue left is disagreement over backlog of salary. He lied that day but the media could only be fixated on his falsehood; detracting and distracting falsehood.

If the news media had any diligence; they’d known what the committee set up recommendations were and juxtapose it with what the FG is now arbitrary offering.

Now this news would be more reasonable if it mentions how much the 23.5% equals to for a lecturer with a PHD and if it’s a fair offer based on what is obtainable anywhere else. A lecturer II with a PhD would still be earning about #170,000 after the increase.

To be clear, the committee set up by the government already reviewed the average across universities in Africa and on the basis of the average after reducing it significantly recommended about 400% increase—- the FG threw the report into the dustbin and constituted another Munzali led committee that recommended a 200% increase which is far and beyond less than obtainable in other Africa countries. All of these is verifiable.

These committees are set up by the FG too.

ASUU is not so much fixated on the reports and understands getting the African average might be gradual. ASUU just wants fair wages for its members too. I am pretty sure if the FG posits a 100% increase immediately and make arrangements to review it annually- members would reconsider the strike.

Hmmm

I still keep asking myself how this strike will benefit the student according to ASSU

ASSU never loves the student

Fight for yourself and we understand but using the student as an excuse for going on strike is a lie

The only thing they fight for that affects the students is for the student to start paying fees

Selfish people everywhere

Selfish Government

Selfish citizen

All na to keep fooling each other

In this age and time, is the FG supposed to be responsible for University Lecturers salary?

ASUU should be ashamed of themselves, they should propose and promote legislations to free themselves from the shackles of government bureaucracies.

By now ASUU should be independent of FG.

You signed agreement with university unions, you didn't implement it after many years, they went on strike, instead of u to attend to it n resolve it in weeks, u prolonged it.. and you are screaming "no work , no pay"

You breached an agreement and still claiming law.

Who is misinterpreting labour laws for the government.??

There’s nothing new here. They presented this offer last month.
FG set up 3 committees on this renegotiation issues. The 3 committees engaged ASUU and arrived at different reports at different times through collective bargaining.
FG abandoned the report of her committees to award 23 percent increment. How did they arrive at the so called 23 percent?
Tax in the federal universities are at 19 percent and you are awarding 23 percent which will go through tax. (Ippis do tax everything)
A chief teacher who’s like the rank of a senior lecturer in the polytechnic earns more than a university professor.
Adamu Adamu is simply wasting his time with this propaganda of 23 percent.
They should go and implement the report of the Nimi Briggs committee for ASUU to suspend this strike
