A standard marking scheme does not restrict itself to the lecturer's lecture notes 11 Likes |

They create marking schemes so that they can give it to other students to mark. I still remember my Physics 513 course on Lasers, after the exam, over half of the class scored E and F, the highest was C. When we made enquires for the low scores, we discovered that such a difficult course was given to a 300l student from another department to mark. The guy marked nonsense because most of our answers even though correct where not in the marking scheme. It was really painful. 3 Likes |

Lectures are just so cruel. They give our results to our senior colleagues maybe to mark and those people ma don't know anything. If you write anything base on your understanding, sorry for you. School done tired me. 1 Like |

Of course it's required. You should stop this long in terms of photocopy the lectures and download during exams. The scheme just gives the basic points that must be covered. It's quite skimpy to look at. As lo g as the points are covered then you get full marks. 2 Likes |

RexEmmyGee: YES. VERY NECESSARY All lecturers create a marking scheme for the course they coordinate. They set it as a standard for marking and they do it because 70% of the time, they do not mark your script. That’s why you expect your lecturer to understand a point you were trying to drive at but could not conclude (maybe due to time constraint) then he gives you zero instead. He probably did not mark it. Even if he did mark it, he still needs a standard. Every single lecturer takes his time to set questions and he/she consults a variety of materials before drawing up that final piece we call a test or an examination. 4 Likes |

RexEmmyGee: YES THEY SHOULD... IT SERVES AS A GUIDELINE WHILE MARKING.... THERE THINGS A LECTURER DEMANDS FROM YOU IN EACH QUESTION |

efesodje:So if the lecturer does not use a scheme, the point am driving at won't be understood by them? |

One of the reason a marking scheme is very important is the distribution of points or marks. At the point of setting the questions, marks must be allocated to each answer. The points may not be the same. It may take a month or 2 to start marking the scripts, its easy to forget the tiny details if marking scheme is not prepared. Secondly, it will also standardize the entire marking of the test or exam scripts. If a lecturer does not prepare a marking scheme, marks may not match across all scripts and its possible to have a student score over a 100%. Thirdly, if the lecturer were to die (God forbid it happens) after the exams was written, with a marking scheme, another lecturer will mark and result will be fair to everyone. Lastly, marking scheme gives a standard method of marking and standard acceptable answers can be adopted. However, i had a Prof who didnt use marking scheme and never lets other people mark his scripts. His marking points are not standard across scripts. For test, he never prepares a question before the time, he constructs his questions on the board. I was told by his senior student how to pass his course when about half of the class usually fail. I passed on 1st attempt. He wants you to make sense and use what he has taught you. In fact, i was told to edit his question if i didnt understand it, and solve as best as i could. He has no respect for final answer but has full respect for logical expression. So he marks every script as an individual question and answer. You must do something in context of his questions, whether right or wrong, your logical expression will impress him and you will get marks 9 Likes |

Marking scheme gives the lecturer guidelines and makes him more objective.the idea of marking scheme favours and protects the students so that the lecturer will not abuse his power and fail the student for whatever reason.after the lecturer marks the students paper and grades him in accordance to each mark allocated for a question,he still submits it to the course coordinator who in turn submits it to the hod.the hod checks and verifies the lecturer was NOT too strict WITH the marking or to loose with the marking and in cases where THE student wrote beyond whatever the lecturer taught and was right,he gets all the marks. So after the hod sees the lecturer is fair,he forwards the marking scheme to the dean who also checks it and then forwards it to the Senate, where they sit over the result and now give final approval for it to be released Mind you the marking scheme is usually made by the lecturers IN ACCORDANCE TO WHAT HE HAS TAUGHT THE STUDENT.the marking scheme doesn't go beyond his course outline.basically it's a mutual responsibility thing and it follows a particular hierarchy. If there was no marking scheme, the student is likely to be at the receiving end.it's the marking scheme that checks the powers of the lecturer 3 Likes |

RexEmmyGee: It is advisable lecturers use a scheme. Let me use overseas as an example, all lecturers have a marking scheme which they use themselves or pass on to graduate students that will do the marking for them. I was handed down a marking scheme too (while doing my Masters) to use in marking the test and exam papers of the undergrads |

RexEmmyGee: Wrong sir. It's a standard that he should mark you against. It will show bias if he gives someone a 70 and give you a 50. If you walk up to him and ask y did u get the score he gave you, he just brings out his marking guide and tell u to mark yourself. If there's an error somewhere then it will be corrected. If not he could just come up with an excuse that you didn't include one gibberish in one line. 1 Like |

If actually you taught the course and you are the same person to mark, I see no point in a marking scheme. Are u saying u can't remember what you taught your student? Marking scheme is necessary where the lecturer or teacher is indispose, someone else will be able mark the scripts using the marking guide but aside that i see no point in it. Truth be told even with the marking scheme any other person marking the scripts aside the lecturer cannot do the job well, where the lecturer would have considered a student as having an idea of the question being asked, the other person will consider it a total nonesense and mark the student wrong. |

From experience over the years, I have discovered that when I mark without marking scheme, students get better scores but anytime I mark with a marking scheme, many fail. |

A marking scheme is absolutely necessary. This enables the lecturer to maintain standards throughout the marking across board... It is also important as a reference material in cases where disagreements may arise between the lecturer and students. If the students feels and complains that he was being failed for no just cause, they can refer to the marking scheme and give to somebody else to mark to see if the lecturer was actually undoing the student... 3 Likes |

Every Lecturer needs a standard but it's important they mark these scripts themselves. Sometimes, ignoring the too much vocabs involve in a definition, you just might want to explain principles, ideas and views in basic languages although, with the terminologies associated with the subject. Sometimes, you sight cases. You quote and reference different authors. You may come in with a formula exactly with what the lecturer gave but in a rearranged form. This is exactly how brilliant students pen down answers in the examination hall as opposed to the 'LA cram, La pour' crew that gives the lecturer exactly how it was written in texts and lecture notes. Only lazy lecturers give out their scripts to dumb fvcks to mark. On the other hand, everything should be blamed on the government. Imagine when one lecturer coordinates 4 to 5 courses, you don't expect him/her to create time to mark all these papers, trust me, it's exhausting! The most annoying part is when senior colleagues use the advantage of marking our scripts to exploit us. Sometimes we are told prior to the release of the grades that no one did better than D. Olodos, out of fear, will organize themselves to enrich the poor bastard. Nigerian is indeed a shithole and I don't blame the American VC that said we are being given expired education. Our country is fvcked |

quintybabe: Let me give u an example, if an exam ask for a definition. The marking scheme does not ask for say 3 marks for the definition word for word. Alot of people will fail. So the marking scheme picks say 3 words without which the definition is incomplete. If a candidate uses the 3 words he get full marks. If he uses 2 he gets 2 marks out of 3, if he uses 1 he gets one mark. The major problem is these keywords may have synonyms. These synonyms should be considered by the marking scheme. Without the marking scheme, lecturer will make mistakes failing some who are right and passing some who are wrong. Also, when a candidate, protest his scores, a remarking must be called and this time not just the lecturer but a selection of lecturers. They will vet the script with the marking scheme. "It is important to have and not need it than to need it and not have it". If you have marked with a marking scheme before, you will find out you need it especially for the 1st1-10 scripts. Pause marking for a week, you will refer to the marking scheme again because you will forget some minor details. Leturers dont have time to mark all scripts at a go. In public universities with strikes, one time it took me a year to see the results. Marking in a span of 6months, only a marking scheme will guarantee fairness. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Yes. Several replies have given reasons why a marking scheme is neccesarry. In addition to that, it is officially part of an examination document which includes the question paper, answer scripts and attendance sheets. All these are submitted to the HOD at the end of the day. Another name for marking scheme is model answers. It therefore means that a student mustn't write word for word to get maximum marks provided it is not structured questions and your answer(s) addresses the question(s) adequately 1 Like |

Darkseid: Unbelievable! A whole Darkseid? You should have sent the lecturer and the marker to Apokolis using your omega beam. Show them say you get power pass. On a serious note, it can be annoying. I recall getting an E and many others, F, in a 400L course while others had As and Bs. On further discovery, it was realized that those who had high grades, their scripts were marked by the lecturer before he traveled for his PHd defense. Before traveling, he gave the remaining scripts to a lab attendant (who initially was a lecturer but was demoted due to collecting bribes from students) to score us. |
