Manchester United have turned down the opportunity to appoint Graham Potter as their new manager after it turns out they have no Champions League experience.

After the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last November, United were looking for a new manager, but before Erik ten Hag was appointed as the club's new manager in April, Ralf Rangnick was announced.

Chelsea's new boss Potter was considered to take the reins at Old Trafford, but was turned down due to his lack of experience in Europe.


United failed to qualify for the Champions League last season and instead qualified for the Europa League.

Potter, meanwhile, was announced yesterday as the new manager of Chelsea, who are in the group stage of Europe's most prestigious competition and won the title just two years ago.

It remains to be seen how he will do in both domestic and European competitions, but he arrives after impressive spells domestically with Brighton and Swansea.

The Dutchman lost his first two games of the Premier League season at United - 2-1 and 4-0 to Potter's Brighton and Brentford respectively - but has since won four league games in a row, including victories over Liverpool and Arsenal.

Chelsea have shown faith in Potter by handing him a five-year deal and appointing the trusted staff unit he felt he needed around him to be successful.

Collaboration and communication are also important. The lack of both in his relationship with former manager Thomas Tuchel was a factor in his downfall.

Potter will referee Chelsea's first match at Fulham tomorrow, but the Premier League match is in doubt after the death of Her Majesty the Queen.
