Over 100,000 Nigerians apply weekly to visit the United States for various reasons resulting in a backlog of visa applications, the United States Ambassador to Nigeria Terrence McCulley has said. McCulley said this yesterday in Abuja when he visited Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru in Abuja. He said the US mission was open to discussions with the Nigerian government on whether or not to extend the validity of the visa. He also said that the embassy was working assiduously to finish up the accumulated backlog of applications which it already has. Speaking on the Bi-national Commission between the two countries, McCulley said Nigeria has to work to wipe out corruption with sincerity so that foreign investors can be more confident to invest in various sectors of the country. Speaking earlier, Ashiru said the two countries would keep working on enhancing their bilateral relations in various sectors, especially in energy, power and security. . . . More Reading . . . |

That is a huge number. Non immigrant visa fees is about $150 and immigrant visa fee is $355. If you do the maths with some assumptions (say 10% are immigrant visa), thats a lot of $$$. 10% 0f 100,000 = 10,000 (10,000 X $355 = $3,550,000 weekly) 90% of 100,000 = 90,000 (90,000 X $150 = $13,500,000 weekly) This means the US embassy in Nigeria is generating an average of $17,050,000 weekly or $68,200,000 monthly. This translates to N11,253,000,000. This is a BIG Wao! About N11B monthly! I hope this number of applicants is just an assumption! |

Nigerian Politicians hardly go to United States to Contract any business because The Law in America forbids bribery by any organization, so the Politicians don't want to engage American Companies in Power generation because there will not get any wuruwuru money, so they by-cut these Amaricans who would have helped us in the Power sector or security. You do not have to blame them |

This is a serious matter, shows our government are not up to the task in providing good standard of living for the population. If things are fine in the country, people will not be paying almost $400 to get visa to the US and still end up doing very low paying jobs when they finally reach the US. |

jerryben12: I doubt that 100,000 nigerians apply for US weekly maybe monthly but definately not weekly. You know how Americans are ,always wanting to blow things out of proportion.I am sure this guy is just exagerating. That being said ,what you have analyzed above just goes to show that we are a nation of unintelligent people.I have heard of people even spending up to N1.5 million to get a US visa via "agents".To make matters worse only about 25% of those applicants actually get the visas issued to them. Anyone who is a first time traveller and applying to go the USA in this day and age to hustle is just plain dumb. The US economy is in tatters and except you want to go into crime ,start a business ,study or have a rich relative in the USA you are better off in another country e.g Canada and Australia. |

The funniest thing is that if the US lines up 10 ships in the ports or lines up 10 Boeing 747 Aircrafts in the airport and ask NIGERIANS to go on board, that they are being taken into slavery in AMERICA, i WONT be surprised to see many gullible NIGERIANS struggling and hustling for SEATS! RUBBISH! |

@ola2u This slave talk is annoying sometimes. I think our people back home are carrying this slavery Syndrome in their minds and souls for too long without proper understanding of diaspora Nigerians. The slaves in Nigeria is enough for the country. If any nation is enslaving its citizenry there is none as worse as in the Nigeria's case. A country where the govt. don't provide basic amenities, loot public funds, poor security of lives and properties, dirty environment, bad education, human rights abuses, etc. What more to those than enslavement!? Helping out with power issue has become enslavement. If the nation could find a solution why all this while the govt. haven't been able to come up with appropriate solution? Even in many African countries electricity problem is almost a thing of the past excepting for Nigeria. |
