this trick is very common.
I took an hausa guy to court and right there in the court the judge read the guy's statement which was written clearly in english language. right there the judge started speaking hausa to the guy and asking him if he understands english, the guy said NO. judge asked if he needs an interpreter? he said yes. na so dem adjourn the case.
when you take a case to the Nigerian courts, just expect anything.

If this was in his own country China, he would have been tried and convicted with a death sentence by now.

How is the lawyer very stupid ? Do you think his lawyer knows Chinese to speak to his client? Any half smart lawyer will tell his client to address the court in Chinese if the court doesn't have an interpreter. On the 27th when the court has an interpreter... I'm almost sure the defendant will not be speaking Mandarin but some little known local language. His lawyer will then ask for his client to be free on bail until such time the court can find an appropriate interpreter. You already know what will happen after bail.
