Have you ever heard of Henrietta Lacks? If not, you're in for a dark, yet informative read.

Henrietta was a poor Black woman who lived in the early 1950s. She was diagnosed with cervical cancer and, in order to treat her, doctors took cells from her tumor without her consent and without informing her of what they were doing.

Those cells would go on to become one of the most important tools in biomedical research, as they could be grown and reproduced in lab settings. But Henrietta never knew any of this. She passed away without ever learning about the legacy of her cells.

Sadly, Henrietta's story is just one example of the abuse Black people have faced within the field of medicine. For centuries, our communities have been used as guinea pigs by researchers with little regard for our safety or well-being. In this article, we'll explore the dark history of Black people being abused in the field of medicine.
