The development has thrown Lagos State into almost complete darkness as electricity supply to the state, which hovers around 700 megawatts under normal situation, dropped drastically last night, while Abeokuta was also adversely affected. - Thisday
Our Government is attributing the drop to “sabotage leak”. I see!

Do you see why Fashola and Ameachi keep asking for the "full" deregulation of the power sector instead of the nonsense GEJ and his Generator/diesel Baron friends are packaging together to decieve Nigerians?

The likes of Fashola and Amaechi must hate , with a passion, the aberration Nigeria is that sees clueless and accidental stooges with totally mediocre records of service  (GEJ, Yar Adua, Shagari et al) always being promoted into very influential office ahead of those who know precisely how to lead us forward fast .

You are right. I don't believe Linda Ikeji because she is a well known Fashola propagandist but I also believe our power supply dropped more than 1000mw.

Blackout Looms as Power Supply Drops by 1,000mw

Efforts by the Federal Government to improve power supply have received a major blow as generation has dropped by 1,000 megawatts owing to “sabotage leak” at Shell-operated Utorogun Gas Plant, a major gas source for the power generating stations.

The development has thrown Lagos State into almost complete darkness as electricity supply to the state, which hovers around 700 megawatts under normal situation, dropped drastically last night, while Abeokuta was also adversely affected.

Managing Director of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), Mr. Hussein Labo, could not be reached over the situation but a source at PHCN attributed the problem to inadequate supply from the transmission station.

“They should exonerate the Distribution Zones this time because we don’t have. If we have, we will give but we don’t have now. So, it is not a distribution problem,” said the source at one of the distribution zones.
The Utorogun Gas Plant located in Ughelli, Delta State, and Chevron’s Escravos Gas Plant are the main sources of gas supply to the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), which supplies gas to the PHCN’s gas-fired plants across the country.

The gas plant, which is a joint venture between Shell, NNPC, Total and Eni SpA (Agip), also supplies gas to industrial users. THISDAY gathered last night that there was sharp drop in gas supply to Egbin Power Station, the biggest power-generating station in the country. Before the latest incident, Egbin was generating 1,080 megawatts of electricity.

A source at the station said the situation was because of a problem at Utorogun, which disrupted gas supply to the plant.

It was learnt that Shell discovered “leaks caused by saboteurs stealing condensates from the Utorogun gas plant”, a development which affected gas supply from the plant. Shell has not officially reacted to the development, but unofficial source at the company confirmed the incident, saying the shutdown would last for only 48 hours for repairs to be carried out on the damaged gas pipeline.

NNPC had facilitated the maximisation of gas production from the NNPC/ Chevron JV facility. Under the arrangement, Chevron increased its gas production from 180 million standard cubic feet per day to 200mscf/d while gas production at the Pan Ocean Oil Corporation Nigeria Limited facility surged to 65mscf/d.
Power generation had hovered around 3,500mw, before it peaked at 3,800mw following ongoing rehabilitation of some existing power plants.

After reading this story, is this the best comment on the situation you could make ?

@topic. If this problem was caused by sabotage like is being speculated, then it's truly appalling how selfish individuals could be at times. That's how an old security guard watching the facilities of a run down company near me, always complains of attempts by some people to vandalise some items there.

it is not about linda Ikeji. Tell your hero (GEJ) to back the full deregulation of the power sector and I will "stop the hate". One tries to see Nigeria as a Nation but it becomes clear , sooner or later, that you have to worry about the State you live in first because Nigeria has too many compromised saboteurs (like GEJ and his AGIP buddies) who do not have the same agenda , as our best leaders like Fashola, of development or dedication to creating civilised societies . Government has no business in the power sector . Everyday, the GEJ Government is spending huge amounts on the power sector and deepening Goverment involvement in the sector via the creation of more FG parastatals and agencies. Billions has been spent , by the FG, on our power sector with no commensurate results. Are you not fed up? Why waste more of Nigeria's money at a time corruption is now fully blown and the likes of Aondoakaa , who endangered the unity of Nigeria, did not even recieve minimal sanction in testimony to how this current Government lacks the integrity to force value for money compliance and discipline?

One has to wonder where sycophancy and partisan support stops for so called educated people like yourself. All of us , if educated and focused, should speak with one voice. A naive and politically unassuming polity is equally to blame, along with bad leadership, for Nigeria's woes.  We should all be consistently asking the Government to chase the expedited ratification of laws that will fully deregulate the power sector. The FG should completely get out of the power sector and let States source their own solutions. throughout the world, we see fed up folks taking back their Country from insensitive dictatorship . In Nigeria we cannot even join hands to ask for the basics. I will continue to mention Fashola because , as a Lagosian, I know power supply will no longer be a problem if GEJ, Mark and other "owners of Nigeria" decide to be selfless for once in their lives.

My brother, instead of breaking things down to this simplistic level, convenient for how Nigerians are obssessed with the notion of others "hating" on their success", why not seek to join the BB, Twitter, Facebook people revolution going on worldwide that is making the voice of the ordinary man powerful ?

Why are we Nigerians , suffering far more than others, immune to world trends? Why can Nigerians , with one voice, not focus on saying "Mr. President , please remove the discredited and corrupt Government fingers completely from our power sector and support full deregulation ASAP? "

Lest it is not clear to some of you, a government that does not fundamentally believe in reigning in corruption and punishing serious misconduct is not the Goverment that can defeat cabals and vested interest in the quest to make our moribund sectors (power, oil refineries et al) work.

The development has thrown Lagos State into almost complete darkness as electricity supply to the state, which hovers around 700 megawatts under normal situation, dropped drastically last night, while Abeokuta was also adversely affected.

This is just silly. Where did Thisday and Linka Ikeji get the 1000MW loss from? Does the distribution channel only supply power to the Lagos and Abeokuta? Is Lagos in complete darkness? Anyone here lives in Lagos?

It was learnt that Shell discovered “leaks caused by saboteurs stealing condensates from the Utorogun gas plant”, a development which affected gas supply from the plant. Shell has not officially reacted to the development, but unofficial source at the company confirmed the incident, saying the shutdown would last for only 48 hours for repairs to be carried out on the damaged gas pipeline.

If the above is the problem why is Jonathan being insulted? It seems CPC supporters just need an excuse to lash out.  undecided

It is difficult to consistently argue that GEJ is doing the right things when fundamentally required reforms are ignored and blatantly pro status quo decisions are being taken everyday eg moribund and grossly corrupt NNPC to turn around our refineries within 2 years. Have you seen any major and badly needed reorganisation of the NNPC , a known home of grand corruption, that fills you with confidence about the achievement of the task GEJ has given it?
Re: Nigeria's Power Supply Has Dropped By 1,000MW by somze(f): 8:39am On Aug 26, 2011
Are we talking about NNPC or about power? Regarding NNPC though the PIB bill includes privatization of NNPC by dividing it into 5 different companies.

Regarding power, generation (and supply I think) is to be privatized. States can generate their own power too. Barring any issues from PHCN workers, NLC and Trade Union (who all oppose privatization) PHCN is to be sold in chunks and changed to fully merge with NERC as a regulatory body.

Sabotage is the word!

What sabotage Read this, its quite comprehensive. This was just recently. July 2011. we are talking about an inefficient Govt here that delights in deceiving his citizens. Failure Galore.

After one year and several billions of dollars in spending, the Federal government appears to be failing to meet critical targets it set for itself in the much publicised power roadmap which was inaugurated with fanfare.

The power roadmap had been roundly acclaimed as the best policy direction by the government and many had hailed it as capable of taking the country out of perennial darkness. But data now suggests that once again, the Federal government is failing to walk the talk in this crucial area.

One significant agenda which the government committed to attaining in the first quarter of this year was the privatisation of the eleven distribution and six generation assets. The government failed to achieve this and the privatisation of these key assets has now been delayed by one whole year.

It was hoped that getting the state-held assets into private ownership and management would spur massive private investment and job creation capable of producing the same flourish that the nation’s telecommunication sector has witnessed since the entry of private enterprises more than ten years ago.

While the Power sector reform roadmap targeted total power generation of 7,033 megawatts of electricity by April 2011, actual power generation as of Tuesday, July 12 was a dismal 3,200 megawatts.

This is still a far cry from the 5,755 megawatts of power government technocrats said would be the realistic delivery target by the end of the first quarter of this year.

Data accessed by BusinessDay show that instead of a steady increase in power generation levels, there has been a worsening of the situation, largely by the failure to supply the required gas, low water level at the hydro power plants and the delay in the rehabilitation of key but ageing thermal power plants in different locations in the country.

According to the roadmap, the transmission and distribution networks should have been reinforced by about 30 percent as of April this year. This target has also not been achieved, and curiously, for a government which puts power at the top of its agenda, questions are now being raised as to why there has been a huge gap in the funds disbursed by the government and the amount needed to get the job done.

Under the power roadmap, the government set for itself a short term twin objectives of rehabilitating1,000 megawatts (mw) of generating capacity at existing Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) power stations, and adding 1,266 mw of generating capacity from the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPPs). Data now shows that the government again failed to achieve this objective while actual power generation during the period fluctuated between 3,000 and 3,200 mw.

Investigation buy BusinessDay revealed that power plants such as those in Jebba, Kainji, Egbin and Shiroro from which the 1,000 mw was supposed to have been secured, are still undergoing rehabilitation, leading to low output.

The thermal stations being built under the NIPP scheme are not fairing better, and it now appears that the wait for gas at these stations may never come to an end as the government’s national gas master plan remains only a plan and incapable of delivering on the lofty targets set for it by the government.

At the Independent Power plant in Olorunsogo in Ogun State, four units of the plant are ready while two units are ready at the Alaoji power plant, but the prospects of them generating power remain gloomy because of poor gas supply to the locations.

At the Sapele independent power plant in Delta State where two units have been completed, generation is being held down by some technical issues relating to opening a gas supply line from the nearby Oben gas transmission station.

In the transmission sector, although some successes have been recorded, the transmission lines remain unattended, leading to a situation, as in the case of Afam, where the government still has not been able to put the power generated there into the national grid because of lack of transmission lines to evacuate the power.

In its effort to reinforce and improve the capacity and reliability of the transmission grid, government commissioned eight new 60 MVA, 132/33kV power transformers at various transmission stations nationwide as of May this year at a cost of N1.5 billion.

Similarly, investigation showed that there has been steady enhancement in the capacity and reliability of the 330kV and 132kV sub-stations as well as its 330kV and 132kV route length lines.

The government also set for itself the target of installing a distribution target of 9,057 megawatts from 5,758 megawatts as of April this year, but the target has yet to be achieved even in July.
