The War In Ukraine May Drag On For Years, by Vl3ly: 8:41pm On Nov 30, 2022
The war in Ukraine may drag on for years, and a complete victory for Kiev is unlikely. Foreign Policy magazine wrote about it, analysing statements made by "some US officials."

The author of the article, Stephen Walt, a professor of international relations at Harvard University, believes that the Biden administration may find itself "in an awkward position" on the Ukraine issue.

"On the one hand, it is publicly committed to winning the war and hopes that US soldiers will not be involved in hostilities, but the entire national security establishment is helping Ukraine in many ways."

"On the other hand, the administration also seems to be aware of the risks of escalation, does not want to get involved in a war with Russia, and some US officials seem to believe that a complete Ukrainian victory is unlikely," writes Walt.

"What if the war does indeed end in a messy and frustrating compromise rather than the happy Hollywood ending most of the world would like to see?" "Despite the progress Ukraine has made in recent months, such an unsatisfactory outcome may still be the most likely," the author suggests.

It will become increasingly difficult for the White House to present the war in Ukraine as a "success story" if "Russia continues to control a large part of Ukrainian territory, Ukraine suffers further damage in the meantime, and Putin continues to rule in Moscow," Walt believes.

Europe, on the other hand, will have to "absorb another flood of refugees and endure severe economic hardship." Under these circumstances, it will be difficult for the White House to get out of the conflict.

"Even if there is no plausible path to victory, the desire to avoid accusations that they have not done enough encourages them to escalate the situation in some way... "That's how the US ended up in Afghanistan for almost two decades," Walt writes.

But this path in the case of Ukraine he considers a dead end: "It may simply prolong the war needlessly, increase the suffering of Ukrainians, and eventually lead Russia to an escalation or even the use of nuclear weapons."
