A South African mom who was told that she had to lose weight before she could get residency in New Zealand, plans to become a plus-size model.

In February Mondelea Bezuidenhout’s residency application was rejected based on her weight.

She was told being overweight would put a strain on the country’s health system.

Doctors had ruled Bezuidenhout to be in good health despite weighing 128kg, a year ago.

According to reports she was told that she had to lose 30kg or leave.

Bezuidenhout said her family’s entire future was on her, and she did as she was told, embarking on a diet-and-exercise regime.

The family was eventually granted residency.

She exercises five days a week and said she had kept the weight off and was not bothered about being fat shamed.

“I’ve always wanted to be a plus-size model, like the Donna Claire ladies – I even named my daughter Donna-­Lee. I’ve always been bigger than other people and I’ve accepted myself for who I am,” she told YOU.

I have a niece I love very much who was born chubby and has been struggling with weight issues ever since. It wasn't her choice.

It's sad that a kid has to be dieting because she's being teased by other kids.

This lady has actually been exercising.

At least she is healthier than before. Obesity is a major health risk. Majority of health issues are associated with obesity. Am happy for her, though more work needs to be done.

The fact that she's exercising is for her own good

The hardship that someone like Tinupoo could bring to Nigeria is capable of making this woman lose two-third of her total body mass within one week.

Thank God better and best are also options. I was called obese at 100kg despite being comprised of muscle. BMI is outdated, however it is a good baseline. I learned to burn both muscle and fat. I am now more energetic than before as opposed to strong.
