A lot of great technology was developed during the Cold War. Things like GPS, the internet and microchips were all developed as part of the arms-race tech boom. Unfortunately, so was the Novichok nerve agent, the world's largest nuclear weapon and Russia's doomsday device, just to name a few.

You read that right. Like something out of one of the worst James Bond movies, the Soviet Union developed a world-ending mechanism that would launch all of its nuclear weapons without any command from an actual human.

Russia currently has an estimated 1,600 deployed tactical nuclear weapons, with another 2,400 strategic nuclear weapons tied to intercontinental ballistic missiles. This makes Russia the largest nuclear power in the world. All of these weapons are tied into the Perimeter, an automatic nuclear weapons control system.

In a crisis that might mean a first strike from the United States, high-ranking government officials or military commanders could activate the Perimeter. Perimeter would guarantee that the Soviet Union (and now, Russia) could respond even if its entire armed forces were wiped out.

Once switched on, the Perimeter system can launch the entire Russian nuclear arsenal in response to a nuclear attack. It was part of the Cold War doctrine of mutually assured destruction, a means of deterring nuclear attacks by ensuring the side who initiated a first strike also would be annihilated.

Called "Dead Hand" in the West, the theory is that a command and control system measures communications on military frequencies, radiation levels, air pressure, heat and short-term seismic disturbances. If the measurement points to a nuclear attack, the Perimeter begins a sequence that would end in the firing of all ICBMs in the Soviet (now, Russian) arsenal.

Perimeter would launch a command rocket, tipped with a radio warhead that transmits launch orders to Russian nuclear silos, even with the presence of radio jamming. The rocket would fly across the entire length of the country.
After a number of test launches to prove the viability of such a command rocket, the Perimeter system went online in 1985.

The Soviet Union never confirmed that such a system ever existed, but Russian Strategic Missile Forces Gen. Sergey Karakaev confirmed it to a Russian newspaper in 2011, saying the U.S. could be destroyed in 30 minutes. Russian state media outlets suggest the system was upgraded to include radar early warning systems and Russia's new hypersonic missiles.

In the United States, similar technologies were developed. Seismic and radiation sensors are used to monitor parts of the U.S. and the world for nuclear explosions and other activity, but the U.S. military never created an automatic trigger for its arsenal. Instead, it ensured that American humans with the ability and authority to launch a second strike would survive a first strike.

Since the Perimeter is reportedly still active, the danger of an automatic, computer-generated nuclear strike still exists. Now that Russian President Vladimir Putin has put Russia's nuclear weapons on high alert, he might have taken Russia's doomsday device on notice as well.

To those who are blind let me enlighten you a bit.

Why fear Russia a country that has never used nuclear weapons than USA the only country in history of the world to have used nuclear weapons on innocent people?

Some people try to justify USA's use of nuclear weapons that they didn't know the extent of its damage before deploying. This is a very big lie to justify the use of nuclear weapons, how? No country deploys such weapons without first test running it with a smaller version to see it's potency. The USA obviously already tested smaller versions before they made the bigger ones used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. So obviously they knew exactly what the bomb will do, they knew how much devastation it will cause and how many will be annihilated.

2. Some people try to justify USA's use of nuclear weapons on Japan by saying it was to prevent more deaths... Like how can you even say this kinda rubbish to support the killing of innocent children and families who had no choice or say in the war. Now why will Japan keep fighting when Germany and Hitler had been defeated already? There's no way Japan will keep fighting that war because it was obvious they already lost. If Germany could not defeat the allied nations with all its arsenal's and soldiers, how can Japan alone take on Soviet Union, UK, USA , France China? What chance does Japan stand against them? No chance at all so it was obvious Japan would definitely surrender but does the USA want that surrender just like that? No, they had the atomic bombs and they were hitching to use it in combat. They wanted to use it to send a message clearly to all, especially the Soviet Union that hello! we have this so don't mess with us...

3. Now tell me after the whole world saw what USA did to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, tell me why should they not get nuclear weapons themselves? If you were a leader of a country at that time will you fold your hands too or get a nuclear weapon youself?

4. We hear everyone saying nuclear weapons is for deterrent purposes. Now ask yourself who are they trying to deter? Is it the USSR or China or UK or France who didn't have it yet or just got it? The answer is obvious. Everyone who got nuclear weapons after the attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki are trying to deter being attacked by the only country in history to use nuclear weapons, they are trying to deter the USA from attacking them with nuclear weapons so they don't end up like Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Hiroshima was bombed 6 of August 1945 (USA)
USSR (SOVIET UNION) acquired nukes 1949.
UK acquired nukes 1952.
France acquired nukes 1960
China acquired nukes 1964 and later others

Now when the USA saw that nations where already getting nukes then they brought up the treaty to stop others from acquiring with collaborations with other nations who already had it.
Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) in 1968 and the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) in 1996.
Other nations like north Korea, India etc who now have nukes all refused to sign such treaty, normal normal if I was the one I wouldn't sign the treaty because only a fool won't try to acquire nukes to deter USA from attacking them directly or indirectly.

If this countries had the deterring nukes,
Afghanistan 1998, 2001-
Bosnia 1994, 1995
Cambodia 1969-70
China 1945-46
Congo 1964
Cuba 1959-1961
El Salvador 1980s
Korea 1950-53
Guatemala 1954, 1960, 1967-69
Indonesia 1958 Laos 1964-73
Grenada 1983
Iraq 1991-2000s, 2015-
Iran 1987
Korea 1950-53
Kuwait 1991
Lebanon 1983, 1984
Libya 1986, 2011-
Nicaragua 1980s
Pakistan 2003, 2006- Palestine 2010
Panama 1989
Peru 1965
Somalia 1993, 2007-08, 2010-
Sudan 1998
Syria 2014-
Vietnam 1961-73
Yemen 2002, 2009-
Yugoslavia , they will all still be standing today same as Ukraine who foolishly gave out all hers.

So with this few points of mine, if you're still allowing your love for USA to becloud your judgement, then I can only say you don't value human lives because the USA don't they are only pretending and you're pretending as well. When nations are talking about the value for human lives, the USA should never open her mouth in such talks.
You can condemn Russia and at the same time condemn the USA for the evil they are. The moment you support one and leave the other , then you don't truly care about human lives as you claim to. Once again I'll rather be much more worried of the USA than I would of Russia.
