As a rule, the defeated are not negotiated with but dictated to. This war was totally avoidable, and Ukraine would have become a super wealthy country that gets benefits from two superpowers, the east (Russia) and the west (EU/US), an economical jackpot it won via its geographical location.

But it never learned from Georgia after being deceived and abandoned by the US during the Russo-Georgian war, or the recent one, the Afghanistan war.
