I bought 2 plots of land 2 years ago in Ibadan and built a bungalow for my mom with half plot. I had plans to use the rest to build multiple semi-detached miniflats which can be rented out and also a big shop that my mom can sit in, watch TV, make money and enjoy her retirement while using the rent from the miniflats to cool off too.

However, Nigeria happened and the plans didn't materialise (although I'm sure it still will one way or another).

Throughout 2022, I'm not sure I executed any contract worth up to N500,000 at once and this took a toll on my finances and wellbeing. So, this 2023, I have learnt lessons.

Therefore, my new year resolution is to diversify.

Since there's still about 1½ plot of land laying fallow, I decided to take over it.

I live permanently in Lagos, so, this means I had to go stay with my mom for a while in Ibadan. Being here for a week now.

I was inspired by a fish farm I visited when I went to spend 2021 Christmas with a friend I met during my NYSC, in 2016. The fish farm is located in a remote farm in Umovum, Owerri.

The owner explained how his life has changed ever since he started. He has added piggery to it when I visited again and boy, it was like someone opened my eyes to wealth free of charge.

I had since decided that I was going to invest in fishery, piggery and oil palm plantation on a commercial/industrial scale because I believe in me. I was going to make that money. I haven't yet but I will by any means.

Now, man can barely eat 3 square meal in Buhari's Nigeria.

So, I saved 200k in my piggyvest from a car I sold in December and denied myself every pleasure of Yuletide.
I saved because I was expectant of another fund but it never came. Instead of waiting on hope, I decided to just get started with the 200k.. wherever I get to, God will send help and send funds.

So, here we are

First, I have allocated only a half out of land to this new venture of mine. I have also visited 3 different catfish farm to learn how to keep up. I also spoke to a fish farm owner close to me and he's agreed to help me build mine with me.. so, here we go!!

I hired Aboki.. they are strong, not lazy and don't complain and don't charge much..

However, the water is too dirty.. so, the plan is to evacuate the dirty water with a pumping machine and pump in new water from my mom's well..

I bought a thousand fingerlings.. my fishes are 2 months old but they are in ibadan and I am in Lagos.. I only send money home to my mom to buy food and help look after it.. unable to take pictures..

Nice job Holybwoy. Did you carry out any treatment on the pond before bringing in the fingerlings? And how often do you change the water.

Chemical treatment is dangerous.. the chemicals stay longer and can harm the fishes..

We plucked leaves from almond trees as much as possible and soaked it in the pond for a week before we transferred the fingerlings.. it worked..

the fingerlings are in good health and have grown well in 2 months..

Congratulations sir. I wish you success. I'm nursing same thought, already looking for nearby fish farm where I can get practical experience. I've been into crop farming but the menace of heardsmen is discouraging for further investment, I want to switch to something I can at least have some control over the risk. I'll be greatful to learn from this thread.
