The issue of gender disparities in the labor market is a complex and multifaceted problem that continues to plague societies around the world. In Nigeria, one of the most striking disparities is the fact that men have higher unemployment rates than women. This issue has important implications for individuals, families, and the wider society.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, as of the second quarter of 2021, Nigeria’s unemployment rate was 33.3%. The data also shows that the unemployment rate for men was 35.2%, while the unemployment rate for women was 31.2%. This disparity is consistent with a long-standing trend in Nigeria, where men have consistently higher unemployment rates than women.

There are several possible explanations for this disparity. One possibility is that there are more women employed in the informal sector of the economy, where jobs are less stable and less well-paid. Women may also be more likely to work part-time or in temporary jobs, which could make them less vulnerable to unemployment during economic downturns.

On the other hand, men may be more likely to work in industries that are more affected by economic downturns, such as construction or manufacturing. Additionally, men may face discrimination in hiring practices, particularly in industries where they are underrepresented.

The consequences of this gender disparity in unemployment rates are significant. For individuals, unemployment can lead to financial insecurity, mental health problems, and a loss of self-esteem. For families, it can lead to strained relationships and difficulties in meeting basic needs. For the wider society, it can lead to increased crime rates and a loss of economic productivity.

To address this issue, policymakers need to take a multi-faceted approach that includes both short-term measures to provide immediate relief to those who are unemployed, as well as long-term measures to create more jobs and reduce gender discrimination in the labor market. This could include measures such as investing in infrastructure to create new jobs, providing training programs to help individuals acquire new skills, and implementing policies to address gender discrimination in hiring practices.

So Why did you think Men struggle with Unemployment more than women and what are the possible ways to improve it for both men and women?
