Carling Cup: Brighton Vs Liverpool (1 - 2) On 21st September 2011 by mukina2: 2:23am On Sep 21, 2011
Brighton manager Gus Poyet admits his side will need to play the "perfect'' game if they are to beat Liverpool in the Carling Cup on Wednesday night.

The Seagulls, flying high in the npower Championship and unbeaten at their new Amex Stadium, got past top-flight opposition in Sunderland in the second round.

But Poyet knows his players face another step up in class against an Anfield outfit who see the competition as a realistic chance of lifting a trophy this season, not to mention one still smarting from a 4-0 defeat by Tottenham at the weekend.

Add to that the likely return of Steven Gerrard to the Reds midfield after injury and Poyet could be forgiven for being a shade pessimistic.
But the Uruguayan is determined to enjoy his 100th game in charge of Brighton - and says his players should do the same.

"When the draw happened it was like a celebration here, like we'd won the league again,'' he said.

"I'm not going to change that because they have a great chance to play against a top-class team.

"There is no better feeling for a player who was playing in League One three months ago to play in front of 22,000 people against Liverpool. I'm not going to try to bring down those emotions.

"A team in the situation Liverpool are in, this is a cup which can be very important. It can be a trophy in the cabinet so they will take it very seriously.

"Saying that, they have injuries and suspensions so it will be a different team. But I know any player who comes in, like Dirk Kuyt or Craig Bellamy, will be top class so it's going to be difficult.

"On top of that if they react (to Sunday's defeat), play well and have the right attitude then we are going to suffer.

"We need to be at the top of our game and be a bit lucky, and maybe if Liverpool aren't then we've got a chance. If both teams play at the same level Liverpool should win because they are quicker, stronger and better technically.

"We have to make sure we are better than them on the day and take our chances. You need practically the perfect game to beat them - but we are going to try.''

Poyet could hand a debut to former Spain midfielder Vicente, who joined as a free agent earlier this month, while 38-year-old assistant manager Mauricio Taricco is set to play at left-back.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish will be forced into a reshuffle at the back yet again this season after it was confirmed Daniel Agger had broken a rib.

The Denmark international sustained the injury when he fell heavily in the first half of Sunday's 4-0 defeat at Tottenham and had to be substituted before half-time.

He could be out for up to four weeks, which would mean he would this Saturday's visit of Wolves, the short derby trip to Everton and a home match against Manchester United.

With Martin Skrtel serving a one-match suspension at Brighton, new signing Sebastian Coates' likely full debut could not be better timed, having been the Dane's replacement at the weekend.

Dalglish's problems were at right-back, where youngster Jon Flanagan started the season but has not featured since as Martin Kelly and Skrtel have both filled in with first-choice Glen Johnson sidelined since the start of the season.

Kelly has missed the past two and a half games with a hamstring problem, meaning Skrtel had to step in before his sending-off at Spurs, as Johnson's return was brief after suffering a recurrence of his hamstring injury after coming on as a substitute at Stoke.

Agger's injury means Dalglish has more defensive issues to deal with at a time when his side have lost two successive matches.

"Daniel has got a fractured rib, so he's struggling a bit,'' said manager Kenny Dalglish.

However, the version Agger's agent Per Steffensen gave to the Danish media differs slightly.

"It's the worst possible news. He has broken two ribs, and he must keep still for four weeks,'' Steffensen told sporten.tv2.dk.

He added on tipsbladet.dk: "Daniel is way down now and I certainly sympathise with him.

"He will miss the two (international) matches against Cyprus and Portugal and there is a match against Manchester United (on October 15) he also misses.

"It's insanely annoying.''

The loss of Agger should be offset by the return of Gerrard, who has been sidelined for six months after a groin operation.

Dalglish has already said, however, that the England midfielder's comeback will not automatically solve the problems they encountered against Spurs.

"I think we have exhausted Sunday with what we have said,'' the Scot told liverpoolfc.tv. "It didn't please anybody and the players were really disappointed.''

2017:It should be 2-0 Liverpool at the Amex Stadium - again - as Dirk Kuyt's delightful flick releases Luis Suarez behind the Brighton defence, but the Uruguayan slides his finish across goal and wide.

This should have been wrapped up by now. . . . .Bellamy just hit the woodwork again after an earlier one by Suarez.

If we keep it up at the other half too. . . . .a decent 2 or 3 nil result would be ideal

Bellamy showed a lot of energy, the guy has lost neither his pace nor finishing, good news for us
Maxi worked hard too.

Henderson &  Caroll are baggage, am sure KK knows that, but i guess he has to justify the 55m spent on both on both of em.
but i'll like to think winning is preferable to to playing those guys that ain't effective
they shud b sent on loan sef, lol.

I hope Dalglish uses the side of his brain he used in the match in EPL matches.

although we won it wasn't all fun,
we did hit the cross bar a couple times still Brighton ran circles around our defence.
the midfield didn't look as solid.

hoping it gets beta.

Gerard's return is good news, ope the injury doesnt return

Refused to watch it because of last Sunday's flop, good score & good news that Gerrard is back.
Hope KD do away with sentiments in subsequent selections, that Sunday's line up was not the best.
Carra also needs to watch out, the rate at which he gives out spots kicks against us is becoming alarming!
