WHAT NEXT AFTER SEEING YOUR UTME RESULT: STEPS TO ADMISSION SUCCESS

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board’s 2023 UTME examination has come and gone. By now, all candidates already know their scores. So, what next? For candidates who got scores lower than they expected, this is not the end of the road for you. If you excelled in the recent JAMB/UTME 2023 examination, there is more ahead of you to conquer. In this article, I will walk you through four keynote points you could follow to secure admission to the school of your choice this year regardless of your UTME score.

1. Know the cut-off marks for your course of choice.
You must first do this once you receive your UTME score. There are two categories of cut-off marks:

– The General cut-off mark: The general cut-off mark is the least score required of you before you can be considered for admission into your school of choice. This score will determine whether you qualify for your school’s screening or Post UTME if there is any. The general cut-off mark for schools rarely changes, so, find out now if your score is high enough to secure consideration for admission into your school and course of choice.

– Departmental cut-off mark: For every admitting department in your prospective institution of studies, there is a cut-off mark. This is the minimum score that must be obtained by a candidate before being considered for admission into the department. Usually, this cut-off mark is not announced until the school calls for an admission screening exercise.

You do not have to wait until then to know what to do. Find out about your department’s previous cut-off marks. With this information, you can know what your chances are. If your score stands high above the two categories of cut-off points, you may stand a chance for admission into the school.

2. If your score falls short of the cut-off marks, consider a change of course or school immediately.
Perhaps if your score is lower than the cut-off marks, you should consider getting a change of course and institution form. Be sure to run a detailed check on the institution you wish to change to. Make sure to only switch to a course that aligns with the subject combinations you wrote in the UTME. Visit the official JAMB website for details.

3. Sign Up For Tutorials to Write JUPEB or IJMB
There are other ways to gain admission into the university. Gone are the days when your UTME score seals your fate. If you failed the UTME, or you believe you did not secure a perfect score for your course of choice, your next line of action may be to register for IJMB or JUPEB.

– JUPEB (Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board) is an approved examination body saddled with the conduct of examinations for candidates seeking direct entry admissions into university courses at the 200 level in Nigerian and partnering foreign universities. JUPEB certificate is recognized in more than 60% of Nigerian universities, including federal, state, and private universities.

– The IJMB (Interim Joint Matriculation Board) Examination qualifies candidates for admission into many universities in Nigeria and overseas. The IJMB examination grants students direct entry admission into 200 Level in 100+ Nigerian universities. In addition, the IJMB syllabus aligns with international standards for education and is therefore recognized by various universities overseas.
