Silvio Berlusconi, the former prime minister of Italy and one of the most influential figures in the country’s history, has died at the age of 86. He was a media tycoon, a businessman, a politician, and a showman who introduced sex and glamour to Italian TV and then brought the same formula to politics, dominating the country for decades. Berlusconi rose from humble beginnings to become Italy’s richest person and the owner of a vast media empire that included television channels, newspapers, magazines, and a football club. He also founded his own political party, Forza Italia (Go Italy!), and served as prime minister for a total of nine years, making him the longest-serving leader in Italy’s post-war era.
