Don't you think 22% inflation MoM and over 18% YoY is high enough for intervention?
The Afcfta and ecowas single currency framework pegs inflation rate for each participating country at 9%
Our unemployment is close to 40% which is critical for any economy.
So while free market is theoretically desirable, Nigeria's fundamentals presently does not support it. Tinubu's team are only looking at fdi
Fdi can save an economy but can also turn an economy to dumping ground.
What makes market virile is a viable middle class with appreciable purchasing power.

Years of economic and fiscal abuse won't be resolved in a month or even a year, let's not put the cart before the horse! One can also argue that it is because of government's intervention that things got so bad.....The cumulative policies by CBN has brought the Naira to a point of waterloo, immediate and precise action is necessary to stop the bleeding.

Ecowas framework is a joke, a fantasy of those dreaming of El Dorado....Let's leave that for now, small wins are needed in order to attract bigger ones. Let the economy open up which attracts investors which leads to more employment and in turn a stronger Naira. Yes the government has given us no reason to trust it in the past but let's be hopeful that we can at least stop the disaster and start making positive gains.....No be everything be doom and gloom grin

You floated Naira at 640 six days ago... it went to 770 today, returned to 750 a few hours ago.. so we are supposed to roll out the drums of celebration?

Oga, I am talking about naira devaluation. . We don't have a substansive export load to make naira thrive against FX.

That is why u are that huge negative margin in its rating just within a week. .

Years of economic and fiscal abuse by whom? The present leader joined forces to mastermind the exit of those who believed in free market. After the debacle of a first term, he pulled his weight to ensure a second term for the same fiscal abuser. So there's a context to the fiscal and economic abuse. It's hypocritical to support a govt that abused the economy for eight years only to turn around and start exposing the economy to shocks in the name of reforms.
I think most of these politicians are unfair to the country and ordinary citizens. Nigerians were ultimately pawns in their power games

Naira cannot thrive again without removing those economic policies which crippled it. Naira devaluation is not to the point of 750 Naira to 1 Dollar, do not let anybody deceive you! Shortage of FX, restrictions on deposits and withdraw etc all played major roles. I'm glad you mentioned export but what exactly are you exporting?

I'm being factual. It is you who is being sentimental by employing excuses on behalf of Tinubu. Did Tinubu come to tell you he was sidelined? There are points I can raise to prove to you he wasn't sidelined as most of you choose to believe. So it's not a fact to claim so blatantly that Tinubu was sidelined when we don't know how much he also chose to sideline himself for whatever reason.
I'm not asking Tinubu to denounce Buhari. But at what point do we choose the health of the nation over our personal nuances? If something or someone is not doing what is believed to be in the best interest of the generality of the nation, should we give frank opinions to such persons at least or stay aloof? Our politics has polluted our economy. And we have no one to blame but the man presently at the helm. Now, the ones expected to bear the cost of rolling back things to default are the citizens.
What manner of hunger games is that? How can eight years of a nation's life be wasted in pursuit of ambitions?

I'm not the type to argue about illogical things hence I'll take a direct approach, he's the president now so I'll only hold him accountable as an elected official. You can choose to hold him accountable for what has happened Buhari's administration even though he was not elected by you and owes you not a DAMN thing......That's your cup of tea, that's your right and you are entitled to me but what you are not entitled to is me giving this more time and energy.......REST IJN!

No vex. I voted for Obi, but I cannot see good and call it bad. If Obihad become president, he would likely have done the same float, and the rates would be doing the same thing. Removing subsidy and floating the Naira are two things that make sense, no matter who did it. There's going to be pain, but our focus should not be on managing the symptoms, but on moving us to a producing country.

Good.
Once it converges around the parallel rate, further improvement will be seen.
A good part of what made the parallel market rate high was the round tripping.People would buy from the banks through connections and sell to the black market or the banks would hoard the dollars they buy from the CBN at favourable rate, sell to abokis and make huge profits while claiming in forms they sold to businessmen.
Why would anyone now sell to abokis if u can source from the bank.
Abokis too would in losing market have to bring down their rates or they lose some patronage particularly when people know there are fraud and counterfeit risks involved in trading in the black market.

It is madness and stupid idea to float the naira in a market that is inefficient and does not have adequate checks and balances.
Don't be deceived by all the hype.
One very rich man can decide to buy the dollar to hoard and kept, and that alone can cause a major move in the exchange rate.

I never said it will be higher than black market rather if official channel makes it easy to transact in dollars, no scarcity, no limit restrictions on deposit and withdrawals etc. If these things can be put in place, majority of sane people would prefer to transact using official channel than black market. E.g. You want to pay school fees for a course abroad or buy a car abroad from a dealer? There's no reason you shouldn't be able to do that through your bank!

A stable currency is essential for economic growth and development, and the appreciation of the Naira on the official forex exchange is a positive sign. It's important to continue implementing policies that promote stability in the foreign exchange market and support local businesses. Let's hope this trend continues towards a more prosperous future for all Nigerians.
